A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body and a plurality of jaws reciprocally disposed in the body in communication with a central bore in the body. A first detent extends radially into the central bore and is releasable in a radially outward direction. Upon insertion of an elongated tool shaft having a polygonal cross section into the bore so that a groove in the tool shaft is aligned with the first detent, the first detent engages the groove and axially retains the tool shaft. Upon movement of the jaws so that the jaw faces engage flat sides of the tool shaft, the jaws rotationally retain the tool shaft.

Chuck with quick change

A chuck includes a driver disposed on a chuck body and in engagement with the jaws so that at least one of rotation and axial movement of the driver with respect to the body opens or closes the jaws. A first detent is disposed in the body in communication with the jaws. At least one of the jaws defines a catch at a predetermined position so that the catch engages the first detent when the jaws are at a predetermined position on the body with respect to a chuck bore.

Chuck having quick change mechanism

A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body having a nose section and a tail section. The tail section is adapted to rotate with the drive shaft, and the nose section has an axial bore formed therein. A driver is axially movably disposed about the body. A generally cylindrical sleeve is rotatably mounted about the body. A grip is mounted in the body in communication with the axial bore and in operative communication with the driver. The driver is in communication with the sleeve and the body so that, in a first state of the chuck, rotation of the sleeve with respect to the body in a closing direction moves the grip toward the axis of the axial bore and so that, in a second state of the chuck, the driver is axially reciprocal with respect to the sleeve and the body.

Quick change chuck

A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body, a plurality of jaws and a driving disk. A bearing includes a first race, a second race and a plurality of bearing elements disposed between the first race and the second race. The first race defines a plurality of recesses therein. One of the second race and the bearing elements is disposed in communication with the first race so that, when the jaws close onto a tool and the first race and the second race rotate relative to each other, the one of the second race and the bearing elements engages successive recesses.

Chuck with improved bearing

A chuck includes a generally elongated body having a tail section configured to rotate with the drive shaft and a nose section having an axial bore formed therein. A plurality of jaws are movably disposed with respect to the body to and away from the axial bore. A collar in axially driving engagement with the jaws is axially movably disposed with respect to the body so that movement in a first axial direction drives the jaws toward the axis and movement in the opposite direction moves the jaws away from the axis. The collar is configured to receive at least one of the body and a shaft and defines a first surface that faces a second surface defined by the body or the shaft when the same is received by the collar. The first surface is tapered in the axial direction from a first end to a second end of the fist surface so that a first radial distance between the second surface and the first end is less than a second radial distance between the second surface and the second end. A rolling element is disposed between the first and second surfaces and defines a diameter greater than the first radial distance and less than the second radial distance. When an axial force is applied to the collar in the second axial direction, the rolling element wedges between the first and second surfaces.

Chuck with one-way lock

A rotary power tool is provided having a remotely actuated chuck device. The chuck is mounted onto the end of a drive spindle that extends from the casing of the power tool. The chuck includes an outer sleeve member that is axially movable relative to the drive spindle between a gripping and release position. A chuck actuating device is provided having a first member engaged with the outer sleeve member and which extends generally radially outward from the drive spindle or chuck. The first member is movable in a direction so as to move the outer sleeve member between the gripping position and release position. A solenoid and a biasing mechanism engage the first member so that the chuck device is movable between the gripping and release positions.

Electronic lever for remotely actuating a chuck device

A power rotary tool has a drive spindle and a chuck device mounted on the end of the spindle. The chuck device has a body member with an axial bore through an end thereof that defines a female pilot section and a threaded longitudinal section adjacent and rearward of the female pilot section. A flat shoulder is defined on the body member rearward of the threaded longitudinal section. The drive spindle has a male pilot section at a forward end thereof and a threaded longitudinal section adjacent and rearward of the male pilot section. A radial stop is defined on the drive spindle adjacent and rearward of the threaded section. Upon mounting of the chuck onto the drive spindle, the male pilot longitudinal section slides tightly within and uniformly contacts the female pilot longitudinal section and the shoulder of the body member abuts directly against the radially extending stop defined on the drive spindle.

System for mounting a chuck device to a rotary power tool

A rotary power tool, such as a router, includes an actuating device engaged with a chuck device to move the chuck device between its gripping and release positions. The actuating device includes a lever member that extends axially relative to a casing of the power tool within an inner circumference of a base member. This lever member is movable relative to the casing and is engaged with the chuck so that movement of the lever is imparted to the chuck device causing the chuck device to move axially between its gripping and release positions.

Rotary power tool with remotely actuated chuck

A tool holding device for holding a tool bit to a drive spindle includes a body member having an axially extending bore defined therein for receipt of a tool shank. The body member includes a plurality of axially extending segments defining the bore. The segments are defined by axially extending slits in the body member. The slits extend from a front face of the body member rearward. The segments are radially compressible to grip upon a tool shank inserted into the bore when a radially compressive force is applied to the segments in the area of the slits. The bore defined by the segments has a tapered diameter that is greater at the front face of the body member and tapers to a lesser diameter in the axially rearward direction.

Enhanced grip tool holding chuck

A quick release chuck device has a body member defining an axially extending bore for receipt of a tool shank. At least a portion of the bore is defined by a plurality of radially compressible and axially extending gripping segments. The gripping segments are equally spaced and defined by axial slots extending from a front face of the body member. At least two axially extending and aligned recesses are defined on each of the gripping segments. An operating member is coaxial with and surrounds at least the gripping segments of the body member. The operating member defines a varying radial width channel with the recesses formed on the outside of the gripping segments. The operating member is axially movable relative to the body member. Actuating elements, such as balls, are disposed within the varying radial width channels. The actuating elements are movable within the channels by axial movement of the sleeve member from a gripping position wherein the balls are in a reduced radial width section of the channels causing the gripping segments to compress radially inward, and a release position wherein the balls move into a greater radial width section of the channels allowing radial expansion of the gripping segments.

Quick-change chuck device

A quick release chuck device includes a body member having a frusto-conical chamber defined therein for receipt of a conventional collet. A plurality of weighted cam members are disposed around the circumference of the body member and include a first end which is pivotally mounted to the body member. The cam members have a center of gravity longitudinally spaced from the pivot point wherein upon rotation of the body member in an operational mode, the cam members are caused to pivot relative to the body member and swing radially outward from the body member. A collet engaging member is disposed at a first end of the cam members and is configured to engage and move the collet into the frusto-conical chamber as the cam members swing radially outward.
