A fuel injector for delivering fuel to an internal combustion engine includes a nozzle having a valve needle which is movable with respect to a valve needle seat. The valve needle travels through a range of movement between a closed position and an open position to control fuel delivery through at least one nozzle outlet. The valve needle cooperates with a needle sleeve or a control member which is located in a piston guide. The valve needle is movable relative to the needle sleeve or the control member. The needle sleeve or the control member is movable relative to the piston guide.

Fuel injector

A multi-fuel rail apparatus for an internal combustion engine communicates fuel from 10 a first fuel source and a second fuel source to a plurality of fuel injectors. Each fuel injector receives fuel from the multi-fuel rail apparatus through a branch connection for each fuel. The multi fuel rail apparatus has a first elongate member including a first longitudinal bore spaced apart from a second longitudinal bore and first and second fuel inlets for fluidly communicating first and second fuels into the first and 15 second longitudinal bores respectively. There is a branch connecting structure for each fuel injector along the first elongate member for fluidly connecting the first and second longitudinal bores with respective branch connections from respective fuel injectors.

Multi-fuel rail apparatus

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine includes an injector having a first orifice to which is tightly connected a pipe having a matching first orifice. Both orifices are surrounded with peripheral smooth surfaces that are complementary surfaces sealingly pressed against each other by a clamping plate.

High pressure fluid connection

Fuel injection equipment includes a high pressure fuel source able to flow high pressure fuel via connecting pipes to a plurality of injectors. The fuel injection equipment is high pressure fuel reservoir-less, a distributed storage for high pressure fuel being arranged in the pipes and in the injectors.

Distributed fuel injection equipment

The present invention relates to a fuel injector for use in delivering fuel to an internal combustion engine. The fuel injector includes a nozzle having a valve needle which is movable with respect to a valve needle seat. The valve needle travels through a range of movement between a closed position and an open position to control fuel delivery through at least one nozzle outlet. The valve needle cooperates with a needle sleeve or a control member which is located in a piston guide. The valve needle is movable relative to the needle sleeve or the control member. The needle sleeve or the control member is movable relative to the piston guide. The invention also relates to a method of operating a fuel injector; and a fuel injector control unit.

A non-return valve assembly for a high-pressure fuel injection system is disclosed. The valve comprises a valve chamber defined in part by a first body and in part by a second body and defining a valve chamber wall, an inlet passage formed in the first body and opening into the valve chamber at a valve seat defined by the first body, an outlet passage, and a valve ball received within the valve chamber and engageable with the valve seat so as to interrupt fluid flow from the outlet passage to the inlet passage through the valve chamber. The valve chamber wall comprises a plurality of guide portions to guide the valve ball in substantially linear movement within the valve chamber.

Check valve assembly

An overhead-camshaft internal combustion engine is disclosed, in which the fuel pumps are arranged to use efficiently the space within a cylinder head assembly of the engine. The cylinder head assembly includes a cylinder head block, and the engine comprises a camshaft rotatable about a camshaft axis and having a plurality of inlet and exhaust cams for actuating associated inlet and exhaust valves of the engine, and at least one fuel pump comprising a unit pump assembly driven directly by a respective pump cam provided on the camshaft. The engine further comprises a plurality of rocker arms driven by the inlet and exhaust cams and arranged to actuate the inlet and exhaust valves. Each rocker arm is pivotable about a rocker arm axis which is substantially parallel to the camshaft axis. The or each pump assembly is mounted between the rocker arm axis and the cylinder head block.

Overhead camshaft internal combustion engine with high-pressure fuel injection system

An actuator arrangement for an electromagnetically operated fuel injector includes a pole member having a first end face and defining an aperture extending from the first end face and an actuator core received within the aperture. The actuator core carries at least one contact member having a contact face that is exposed through the aperture. An encapsulating member is received within the aperture and surrounds the at least one contact member. The first end face of the pole member, the contact face and the encapsulating member are arranged to provide the actuator arrangement with a substantially planar surface for mating with an adjacent component, in use.

Actuator arrangement for an electromagnetically operated fuel injector and method for constructing

A fuel injector comprising a valve needle for controlling fuel injection through an injector outlet, a control chamber for receiving fuel and a three-way control valve that controls fuel pressure within the control chamber to control opening and closing movement of the valve needle to control fuel injection through the outlet. The three-way control valve controls communication between (a) a first passage and a second passage and (b) a third passage and the second passage, and includes a first housing provided with a guide bore for a control valve member, whereby movement of the control valve member is guided within the guide bore and a first valve seat, defined by a second housing, with which an end of the control valve member is engageable to control communication between the first and second passages. The first housing is a control valve housing and the second housing is an injector housing, the injector housing being provided with a guide bore for the valve needle or a part carried by the valve needle. The control valve also defines a second valve seat defined by the first housing with which the control valve member is engageable to control communication between the second and third flow passages, and an intermediate housing located between the first and second housings, wherein the second passage is defined within the intermediate housing.

An actuator arrangement for an electromagnetically operated fuel injector includes a generally cylindrical actuator core having a longitudinal axis and defining an inner pole face of the actuator arrangement. The actuator core is formed of a bespoke magnetic material. A wire coil is disposed around the actuator core arranged to be connected to a power source to generate a magnetic field around the coil. A pole member is formed of a high strength material and defines an aperture for receiving the actuator core. The pole member defines an outer pole face of the actuator arrangement substantially co-planar with the inner pole face. An armature is movable in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis in response to the magnetic field. The magnetic field passes into the armature in the region of the inner pole face and into the armature in the region of the outer pole face.

Actuator arrangement

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine, comprises: a pump comprising a pumping plunger which is driven, in use, to cause pressurization of fuel within a pump chamber, an accumulator volume for supplying fuel to a fuel injector, a fuel passage providing fluid communication between the pump chamber and the accumulator volume, and an inlet control valve operable to control fuel flow into the pump chamber from a low pressure reservoir; wherein the inlet control valve is a latching inlet valve. The fuel injection system may be a hybrid fuel injection system, having a rail valve located in the fuel passage between the pump chamber and the accumulator volume. The latching inlet valve may be a two-way electronic latching poppet valve, and the rail valve may be a non-return valve. A method of operating such a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine is also described.
