The invention provides small enzyme-containing granules having an inorganic salt core and an enzyme-containing layer coated over the core, and methods for producing such granules. The majority of the enzyme granules are less than 300 &#x3bc;m in diameter. The granules are suitable for incorporation into compositions such as cleaning, textile processing, and animal feed compositions.

Small enzyme-containing granules

The present teachings provide modified enzymes, preferably phytases, which have increased stability, hypothesized to arise from increased glycosylation. The enzymes can be modified to introduce or increase the number of glycosylation sites in the amino acid sequence, or glycosylation can be increased by the use of specific host production methods, or both. The enzymes of the present teachings have an increased stability after treatment at elevated temperature, which can be measured by inactivity reversibility or percent recovery following a treatment such as heating. The enzymes of the present teachings find application for example in food, feed, and feed pelleting.

Glycosylation as a stabilizer for phytase

The present invention provides highly impact-resistant, water-soluble or water dispersible, low-dust granules comprising an active ingredient and methods for obtaining the same.

The preparations may have an internal phase dispersed within an external phase. The internal phase may be a hydrophilic carrier and an active agent. The external phase may be a silicone matrix.

The present invention provides an improved coating material for use with particles, such as enzyme granules, and the like. In particular, the present invention provides a modified PVA, as well as particles or granules that include such coating. The PVA is modified by substituting hydrophilic moieties for the hydroxyl or alcohol groups of the PVA. Substitution may be achieved with hydrophilic acids, amines, thiols, or combinations thereof.

The present invention provides methods and devices for measuring granule impact strength and granule attrition rates by vibrating a small container of granules at a well-controlled amplitude in order to inflict reproducible damage to the granules. Damage to the granules is measured as a function of time and amplitude and attrition rates are measured in terms of dust generate per number of collisions versus mass of the granules. The measurements obtained yield a highly reproducible means for characterizing granule attrition, attrition rates, and fragmentation.
