Disclosed are aqueous, storage-stable, crosslinkable polymer compositions comprising: (a) an aqueous dispersion of a an acrylic polymer component containing certain carbonyl-containing functional-groups; (b) a nitrogen-containing compound having at least two carbonyl-reactive nitrogen groups; and (c) optionally, co-solvents, pigments, fillers, dispersants, wetting agents, anti-foam agents, UV absorbers, antioxidants, biocides, and stabilizers. Such compositions are useful as coatings or binders in coating compositions, or as adhesives.

Waterborne crosslinkable coating compositions

A multi-stage aqueous emulsion-polymer suitable for use in dirt pickup resistant coatings and coatings containing the polymer are provided. The multi-stage aqueous emulsion polymer includes (i) a first polymer including at least one nonionic copolymerized monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, from 0.5% to 7% of a copolymerized monoethylenically unsaturated ionic monomer, based on the weight of the first polymer, and from 0% to 1.0%, based on the weight of the first polymer, of a copolymerized multi-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the first polymer having a Tg of 15&deg; C. to 105&deg; C.; and (ii) a second polymer comprising at least one nonionic copolymerized monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, from 0% to 2% of a copolymerized monoethylenically unsaturated ionic monomer, and from 0.25% to 6%, based on the weight of the second polymer, copolymerized multi-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the second polymer having a Tg of &minus;55&deg; C. to 30&deg; C., the second polymer having a different composition than the first copolymer, and the second polymer being from 25% to 75% of the total weight of the first polymer and the second polymer, based on dry polymer weights.

Dirt pickup resistant coating binder and coatings

Alkali-resistant core-shell polymers having an acid-insoluble core and an acid-soluble shell are prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture having acid-ionizable functionality such that the resulting polymer has an acid-insoluble core and an acid-soluble shell. Films from these alkali-resistant, core-shell polymers are resistant to high pH environments where alkali-resistance is required. The alkali-resistant, core-shell polymers are useful in applications such as inks, clear overprint varnishes, coatings, metal adhesion, fiber treatment, paper treatment, cathodic deposition coatings, stain blocking, coagulants and flocculants.

Alkali-resistant core-shell polymers

Uniformly sized polymer particles of 1-50 .mu.m diameter are made by gradually combining a water-insoluble monomer mixture with an aqueous dispersion of emulsion-polymerized polymer particles in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer and an oil-soluble, free-radical polymerization initiator.

Process for making controlled, uniform-sized particles in the 1 to 50

A method for treating substrates with an aqueous composition is provided. The aqueous composition contains an aqueous dispersion of copolymer particles which have at least two mutually incompatible phases and where the particles have an average particle size of from about 20 to about 70 nanometers.
