A method to improve a system's signal performance may comprise: generating a first signal, transmitting the first signal, receiving the first signal, and generating a second signal. The method may further comprise: identifying signal distortions generated by at least one of, a transmitter hardware that transmits the first signal and a receiver hardware that receives the first signal, modifying the second signal based upon the identified signal distortions, correlating the first signal and the second signal by a correlator to generate a correlated signal, and outputting the correlated signal.

In cellular communication systems, hand-offs are performed to maintain links as subscriber units (110) and beams move relative to each other. The hand-off determination procedure (500) is performed in overlap regions (240, 340). Candidate beams are identified and hand-off types are determined based on the satellite (120) associated with the candidate beam. Thresholds are established and changed to optimize a hand-off request determination procedure (500). Two hand-off types are considered. An inter-satellite hand-off is requested (514) when the current beam and the candidate beam are on different satellites (120). An intra-satellite hand-off is requested (510) when the current beam and the candidate beam are on the same satellite (120). Thresholds are dynamically changed and algorithms are used to minimize the number of inter-satellite hand-offs.

The method finds the best matches between a plurality of input data vectors (16) and an associated plurality of input portion of weight vectors. The input portion of the weight vectors are adapted. The identification codes (12) which represent the sequence of best matched weight vectors are stored in a memory (12) and the associated output portion of weight vectors (22) are output. A sequence of output portion of weight vectors (22) is matched with predetermined models (21). A sequence of labels (24) associated with the best matched model is stored which identifies the categories of match data. The labels (24) are sequentially combined with the identification codes (12) to build adaptation vectors. The adaptation vectors are then used to sequentially adapt the output portion of weight vectors (22).

A neural net architecture provides for the recognition of an input signal which is a rate variant of a learned signal pattern, reducing the neural net training requirements. The duration of a digital sampling of the input signal is scaled by a time-scaling network, creating a multiplicity of scaled signals which are then compared to memorized signal patterns contained in a self-organizing feature map. The feature map outputs values which indicate how well the scaled input signals match various learned signal patterns. A comparator determines which one of the values is greatest, thus indicating a best match between the input signal and one of the learned signal patterns.

A kit for converting a small boat, such as a canoe, into a sail boat provides a mast support, leeboards, hiking seats, and a rudder assembly. All of these parts are attached to the boat without the need to permanently alter the boat. The mast assembly provides the option of tilting the mast in the fore and aft direction, and the rudder is mounted along one side of the boat. Both the rudder and the leeboards may be deliberately raised from their normal operating positions to permit the boat to be beached. Also, both the leeboards and the rudder are yieldably biased to their normal operating positions, but pivot upwardly and rearwardly upon colliding with an underwater obstacle, to prevent them from being damaged. After the obstacle has been passed, the leeboards and the rudder resume their normal operating position.
