The present disclosure is directed to intravascular devices, systems, and methods having a core wire with multiple flattened sections. In one aspect, a sensing guide wire is provided. The guide wire includes a first flexible elongate member; a sensing element positioned at a distal portion of the first flexible elongate member; and a second flexible elongate member coupled to the first flexible elongate member such that the second flexible elongate member extends distally from the first flexible elongate member; and wherein a distal portion of the first flexible elongate member includes at least two flattened sections, and wherein the first and second flexible elongate members are coupled along a portion of one of the at least two flattened sections. In other aspects, methods of forming a sensing guide wire are provided.

Intravascular devices, systems, and methods having a core wire with multiple flattened sections

Intravascular devices, systems, and methods are disclosed. In some embodiments, side-loading electrical connectors for use with intravascular devices are provided. The side-loading electrical connector has at least one electrical contact configured to interface with an electrical connector of the intravascular device. A first connection piece of the side-loading electrical connector is movable relative to a second connection piece between an open position and a closed position, wherein in the open position an elongated opening is formed between the first and second connection pieces to facilitate insertion of the electrical connector between the first and second connection pieces in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the intravascular device and wherein in the closed position the at least one electrical contact is electrically coupled to the at least one electrical connector received between the first and second connection pieces.

Side-loading connectors for use with intravascular devices and associated systems and methods

Intravascular devices, systems, and methods are disclosed. In some instances, the intravascular device is a guide wire having a core wire formed of multiple materials. For example, a sensing guide wire is provided that includes a core member having an inner section and an outer section surrounding the inner section, wherein the inner section is formed of a first material and the outer section is formed of a second material that is different than the first material; and a sensing element coupled to a distal portion of the core member. Methods of making, manufacturing, and/or assembling such intravascular devices and associated systems are also provided.

Intravascular devices, systems, and methods are disclosed. In some embodiments, side-loading electrical connectors for use with intravascular devices are provided. The side-loading electrical connector has at least one electrical contact configured to interface with an electrical connector of the intravascular device. A first connection piece of the side-loading electrical connector is movable relative to a second connection piece such that in an open position an elongated opening is formed between the first and second connection pieces to facilitate side-loading of the intravascular device into the connector and in the closed position the at least one electrical contact is electrically coupled to the at least one electrical connector of the intravascular device received between the first and second connection pieces and a communication cable extends from the connector in a direction coaxial with or parallel to the longitudinal axis of the intravascular device.

Side-loading connectors with inline cabling for use with intravascular devices and associated systems and methods

The invention is directed to a guidewire having a distal section with multiple distally tapered core segments with at least two contiguous distally tapering core segments in which the most distal tapered core segment preferably has a greater degree of taper than the proximally contiguous tapered core segment. The invention is also directed to an elongated intracorporeal device, preferably a guidewire or section thereof, that has a core member or the like with a plurality of contiguous tapered segments having taper angles that are configured to produce a linear change in stiffness over a longitudinal section of the device. The device may also have a core section with a continuously changing taper angle to produce a curvilinear profile that preferably is configured to produce a linear change in stiffness of the core over a longitudinal section of the device.

Guidewire having linear change in stiffness

A guide wire for advancing a medical device such as a catheter through a patient's body lumen which has an elongated core with proximal and distal core section, a flexible tubular member such as a coil on the distal end. The wire core includes surface textures that are translated into the overlying coating. Alternatively, the coating has its own surface texture. The surface textures include randomly or non-randomly spaced bumps, divots, ridges, helical grooves, longitudinal grooves, undulations, etc.

Textured polymer coated guide wire and method of manufacture

A guide wire for guiding a medical device within a patient is disclosed. The guide wire has a solid inner core made of high modulus material such as Conichrome&#xae; or a rhenium alloy, and an outer shell made of a flexible, kink resistant material such as a nickel-titanium alloy. Preferably, the modulus of elasticity of the inner core material is at least about 20 percent greater than that of the outer shell material. The outer shell is mechanically joined to the inner core through a drawing or cladding process. In various embodiments, the distal end of the guide wire can be tapered by grinding away the outer shell to expose the inner core. Because of its stiffness, it can be manually shaped by the physician or cardiologist.

The present invention is directed to an intracorporeal device, preferably a guidewire, and method for making the device. The guidewire of the present invention is formed, at least in part, of a composite elongate core formed, at least in part, of precipitation hardened material. The elongate core members of the present invention will have an ultimate tensile strength and modulus of elasticity greater than the same for an identically dimensioned elongate member formed from superelastic NITINOL alone.
