An exercise device having (-) a frame, (-) left and right leg linkages, each including (i) an upper leg member pivotally coupled to the frame for pivoting about an upper pivot point with the upper pivot point of each leg linkage defining a point on a laterally extending upper pivot axis that passes through the upper pivot point of each leg linkage, and (ii) a lower leg member directly pivotally coupled to the upper leg member distal to the upper pivot point for pivoting about a lower pivot point, and (-) a foot support attached to each lower leg member distal to each respective lower pivot point. The invention characterized by an ergonomically synergistic spatial orientation and relationship amongst and between the upper leg members, lower leg members, upper pivot axis, lower pivot axis, hip region of a user, knees of a user, a biased damping means in communication with the lower leg members, and an interconnect member interconnecting the lower leg links with and the biased damping means.

An exercise device having (&#x2014;) a frame, (&#x2014;) left and right leg linkages, each including (i) an upper leg member pivotally coupled to the frame for pivoting about an upper pivot point, (ii) a lower leg member directly pivotally coupled to the upper leg member distal to the upper pivot point for pivoting about a lower pivot point, and (&#x2014;) a foot support attached to each lower leg member distal to each respective lower pivot point. The invention characterized by a biased damping means in communication with each lower leg member via an interconnect member that defines an influence line segment, and an ergonomically synergistic spatial relationship between the influence line segment and a leg line segment defined by the upper pivot point and the lower pivot on each leg linkage.

A strength training exercise apparatus includes a frame having an upright back rest, and a horizontal seat, and further includes opposing arm members pivotally mounted to the back rest. The arm members are movable through an arcuate range of motion, and include locking pins for selectively locking the arm members in desired angular positions. The apparatus still further includes a resistance assembly consisting of a fixed anchor mounted on the frame, a movable anchor which is movable relative to the fixed anchor, and a plurality of elastomeric resistance cords releasably secured between the movable anchor and the fixed anchor to provide resistance to movement of the movable anchor. A pull line is mounted on guide pulleys along the length of the arm members, and is received in association with the movable anchor whereby outward movement of the pull line with respect to the arm members causes movement of the movable anchor with respect to the fixed anchor. The exercise apparatus further consists of a leg member pivotally mounted to the seat, and a second resistance assembly including a second movable anchor coupled to the leg member, and a second plurality of elastomeric resistance cords secured between the fixed anchor and the second movable anchor for providing resistance to pivotal movement of the leg member.

The present invention is an improved exercise machine for simulating stair climbing, particularly adapted for in-home use. The device includes a generally upright frame with a base. Right and left foot pedals are pivotally mounted to the base on either side of the upstanding portion of the frame and a handlebar is provided adjacent the upper end of the frame. The foot pedals are linked to a mechanical resistance element, namely a flywheel. The linkage includes a strap connecting each pedal to a single drive shaft, in turn connected by a belt transmission to the flywheel. A resistance adjustment feature is included in the invention.
