A process for preparing ring-halogenated .alpha.-methylstyrenes from the corresponding .alpha.-halocumenes is disclosed. The dehydrohalogenation is accomplished using only water and optionally an organic solvent. The process eliminates the need for added base and a phase-transfer catalyst.

An addition polymerizable antioxidant is prepared by reacting an isocyanatoalkyl ester of an addition polymerizable carboxylic acid (2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate) with an antioxidant functionality bearing an active hydrogen moiety which is reactive with the isocyanate.

Copolymers comprising 0.10 to 50 parts by weight of hindered phenol antioxidant monomer and at least 10 to 60 parts by weight of at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer are prepared, preferably in emulsion polymerization systems.

Polyoxazoline compounds are prepared by reacting a polymercaptan with a 2-alkenyloxazoline or a 2-alkenyloxazine. The compounds so prepared have at least two oxazoline or oxazine functionalities and can be employed in applications where a compound having an oxazoline or oxazine functionality has useful activity.

An improved process for preparing derivatives of mercaptophenols containing nitrile, carbonyl, sulphone or ester groups characterized by reacting the components in a polar solvent with an amine catalyst. The catalyst can be removed from the product by co-distillation with the solvent to leave a relatively pure product free of contaminant without the need for further purification steps. The preferred amine catalysts are tertiary amines.

Process for reaction of mercaptophenols with vinyl compounds

An addition polymerizable UV stabilizer is prepared by reacting an isocyanatoalkyl ester of an addition polymerizable carboxylic acid (such as 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate) with an UV stabilization functionality bearing an active hydrogen moiety which is reactive with the isocyanate (such as 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone).

Nitrogen oxides have been found to be effective to inhibit during distillation the vinyl polymerization of a 2-isocyanatoalkyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid. For example, crude 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate was sparged with nitric oxide in nitrogen gas during distillation at 90.degree. C., so as to effect a concentration of nitric oxide in the gas phase of 376 parts per million by weight. Essentially pure 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate was recovered in 70 percent yield.
