Embodiments describe a battery system that includes a first battery module coupled to a regenerative braking system and a control module that controls operation of the battery system by: determining a predicted driving pattern over a prediction horizon using a driving pattern recognition model based in part on a battery current and a previous driving pattern; determining a predicted battery resistance of the first battery module over the prediction horizon using a recursive battery model based in part on the predicted driving pattern, the battery current, a present bus voltage, and a previous bus voltage; determining a target trajectory of a battery temperature of the first battery module over a control horizon using an objective function; and controlling magnitude and duration of electrical power supplied from the regenerative such that a predicted trajectory of the battery temperature is guided toward the target trajectory of the battery temperature during the control horizon.

Cooling strategy for battery systems

The present disclosure includes an automotive battery system that uses switching devices to increase operational performance and reliability. The battery system includes a battery cell, a primary switching device electrically coupled to a terminal of the battery cell, and a secondary switching device electrically coupled to the terminal of the battery cell and in parallel with the primary switching device. The primary switching device includes an electromechanical switching device that enables charging or discharging of the battery and generates a boosted voltage. A secondary switching device includes a solid-state switching device and a diode, electrically coupled in series, which detect short circuit conditions in a power-efficient manner and remove the short circuit condition by using the boosted voltage to actuate the armature. Furthermore, parallel switching devices work together to deliver appropriate amounts of power as required by an electrical device, increasing the performance, reliability, and life-span of a battery system.

Battery module parallel switching device systems and methods

An electrical system comprising a battery system and a control system is disclosed. The battery system may comprise a first switching device, a first battery electrically coupled in series with the first switching device, a second battery electrically coupled in parallel with the first switching device and the first battery when the first switching device is in a closed position, and a second switching device coupled in series with a load. The control system may be configured to perform diagnostics on the battery system.

Disclosed is a battery system comprising a battery pack having a plurality of cells, each of the plurality of cells each having a cell temperature; a battery management system coupled to the battery pack and designed to obtain temperature plurality of temperatures from the battery pack wherein the battery management system is configured to output a single battery pack temperature value. Method for determining battery pack temperature and state of charge

An energy storage system may include battery packs, such that one terminal of the battery packs is electrically coupled to a resistor representative of an isolation resistance of the battery system. The system may include a semiconductor relay switch, a plurality of resistors configured to electrically couple to the battery packs via the semiconductor relay switch, a gain field-effect transistor (FET) configured to electrically short at least one resistor of the plurality of resistors, and a control system. The control system may send a first command to the semiconductor switch to close, acquire a first voltage waveform, send a second command to the semiconductor switch to open, send a third command to the gain FET to close, send a fourth command to the semiconductor switch to close, acquire a second voltage waveform, and determine the isolation resistance based on the first voltage waveform and the second voltage waveform.

Systems and methods for measuring isolation resistance

The present disclosure includes a battery module having a first electrochemical cell and a second electrochemical cell positioned adjacent to the first electrochemical cell. The battery module also includes a separator plate disposed between the first electrochemical cell and the second electrochemical cell. The separator plate includes a body comprising a first side and a second side opposite the first side. The first side is disposed adjacent a first face of the first electrochemical cell and includes a first indention. The first indention defines a first space between the first face of the first electrochemical cell and the first side of the separator plate. The first space is configured to enable swelling of the first electrochemical cell into the first space.

An energy storage system may include one or more battery packs, wherein one terminal of the one or more battery packs is electrically coupled to a resistor representative of an isolation resistance of the energy storage system, a semiconductor relay switch, a plurality of resistors configured to electrically couple to the one or more battery packs via the semiconductor relay switch, a gain field-effect transistor (FET) configured to electrically short at least one resistor of the plurality of resistors, one or more capacitors electrically couples to a system ground of a vehicle and the one or more battery packs, and a control system configured to control the semiconductor switch and the gain FET.

The present disclosure a battery module having electrochemical cells and a bus bar carrier. The bus bar carrier includes a finger having a first surface, a second surface opposite to the first surface and configured to be disposed proximate to a first electrochemical cell of the plurality of electrochemical cells, a thickness extending between the first surface and the second surface, an opening extending through the first surface, through the thickness, and through the second surface, and a cavity disposed adjacent to the opening and exposed through the second surface of the finger. The battery module also includes a lead wire passing through the opening from the first surface of the finger to the second surface of the finger, and a sensor coupled to the lead wire to enable communication between the sensor and the first electrochemical cell, wherein the sensor is disposed in the cavity.
