A system and method for processing documents is described. The system and method provide for executing a command as part of the execution of an application program, where execution of the command causes the transfer of the document between a processing device in a computer system and a peripheral device. The present invention also provides for transferring the document data between the processing device and the peripheral device in response to the command. The present invention further provides for archiving the document data in a memory in the computer system in response to the command and transparently to the execution of the application program.

In one embodiment, documents scanned in or printed during the course of office equipment operation are automatically archived. When a document is copied, printed, or faxed, a document image is archived by the document management workstation without further user intervention. In accordance with a first aspect, an image processing device includes a receiving means for receiving a single input, a printing means, a memory device, and a communication means for communicating with said memory device. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for automatic document classification based on text and image. A new document is analyzed based on textual content as well as visual appearance. The new document is automatically stored in one or more mirror directories in which the new document would most likely be stored by the user of the device if the new document were placed manually. Determination of the most likely directories is based on an analysis of multiple documents stored by the user in various directories. The mirror directories are components of a mirror directory structure, which is a copy of a pre-existing directory structure, such as the user's hard drive. By storing the new document automatically, the user is relieved of the duty of manually selecting a directory for the new document.

Automatic document classification using text and images

A system and method for handling duplex documents by exploiting bleed-through of the image on the back side of a document. The images of the back sides and front sides of documents are associated with one another to assure correct output in copying, faxing, scanning, etc. This increases reliability, eases recovery from errors including paper jams. Improved document handling capabilities also include avoiding twice duplicated and skipped pages and correcting page orientation errors.

A method and apparatus for document matching using structural information. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for identifying documents based on the visual structure of the document. Structural information describing a document is generated and used to search for matching stored documents. In one embodiment, images are converted to a point set and the point sets are compared. For example, an image of a document that is sought is converted to a point set and the point set is compared to point sets corresponding to stored documents. When point sets match within a predetermined tolerance, the documents match. In one embodiment, the Hausdorff measure is used to compare point sets.
