A tensioner for a power transmission belt is provided that is adapted to be operated in an endless path, the tensioner comprising a support for being fixed relative to the belt, a belt engaging member carried by the support and being movable relative thereto. The tensioner has a mechanical spring operatively associated with the support and the belt engaging member for urging the belt engaging member relative to the support and against the belt with a force to tension the belt. The tensioner has a frictional dampening device operatively associated with the support and the belt engaging member to dampen the movement of the belt engaging member relative to the support in at least one direction of movement thereof, the dampening device having a longitudinal axis, the support comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and being fixed from movement relative to the belt engaging member. The belt engaging member has a portion thereof being rotatably carried by the shaft so as to rotate relative to the shaft, the dampening device has a pair of frictionally engaging first and second surfaces. The mechanical spring provides the force for urging the belt engaging member relative to the support and against the belt to tension the belt and further provides a certain force for urging the first surface against the second surface to dampen the movement of the belt engaging member.

Belt tensioner, components therefor and methods of making the same

A tensioner for a power transmission belt is provided that is adapted to be operated in an endless path, the tensioner comprising a support for being fixed relative to the belt, a belt engaging means carried by the support and being movable relative thereto. The tensioner has a mechanical spring operatively associated with the support and the belt engaging means for urging the belt engaging means relative to the support and against the belt with a force to tension the belt. The tensioner has a frictional dampening device operatively associated with the support and the belt engaging means to dampen the movement of the belt engaging means relative to the support in at least one direction of movement thereof, tile dampening device having a longitudinal axis, the support comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and being fixed from movement relative to the belt engaging means. The belt engaging means has a portion thereof being rotatably carried by the shaft so as to rotate relative to the shaft, the dampening device has a pair of frictionally engaging first and second surfaces. The mechanical spring provides the force for urging the belt engaging means relative to the support and against the belt to tension the belt and further provides a certain force for urging the first surface against the second surface to dampen the movement of the belt engaging means.

A tensioner for a power transmission belt that is adapted to be operated in an endless path and a method of making the tensioner is provided, the tensioner comprising a support unit for being fixed relative to the belt, a belt engaging unit carried by the support unit and being movable relative thereto, a coiled torsion spring having a first end operatively interconnected to the support unit and a second end operatively interconnected to the belt engaging unit for urging the belt engaging unit relative to the support unit and against the belt with a force to tension the belt, the spring having a certain torque when the belt engaging unit is disposed at a certain position relative to the support unit, the tensioner having changeable structure holding one of the ends in an adjusted position relative to its respective operatively interconnected unit so as to provide for the certain torque of the spring when the belt engaging unit is disposed at the certain position relative to the support unit.

Tensioner for a power transmission belt and method of making the same

A belt tensioner and method of making the same are provided, the tensioner comprising a support for being fixed relative to a belt, a belt engaging unit carried by the support and being movable relative thereto, a spring operatively associated with the support and the belt engaging unit for urging the belt engaging unit relative to the support and against the belt with a force to tension the belt, and a frictional dampening unit operatively associated with the support and the belt engaging unit to dampen the movement of the belt engaging unit relative to the support, the dampening unit comprising a pair of frictionally engaging first and second parts with the first part comprising an annular pad of friction material that is coaxially disposed and axially movable on a shaft of the support relative to the second part, and a second spring urging the first part against the second part with a certain spring force, the first part of the dampening unit having a guide thereon, one of the support and the belt engaging unit having an opening therein that receives the guide therein to guide axial movement of the first part, the annular pad and the guide of the first part of the dampening unit comprising a one-piece homogeneous member.

Belt tensioner and method of making the same

A belt pulley and method of making the same are provided, the pulley having a hub and a peripheral groove for receiving part of an endless belt therein that is to drive the pulley or be driven thereby whereby the pulley is adapted to be rotated about a longitudinal axis of the hub. The pulley has a pair of opposed facing sides defining at least part of the groove therebetween and has a pair of oppositely facing outboard sides, the sides each having an inner peripheral portion and an outer peripheral portion. The pulley has a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart and radially disposed substantially straight vanes extending outwardly from at least one of the outboard sides thereof. Each vane has an inner peripheral end and an outer peripheral end respectively disposed adjacent the inner peripheral portion and the outer peripheral portion of its respective outboard side and has an outer edge that is disposed substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis of the hub from substantially the inner peripheral end thereof to the outer peripheral end thereof and is spaced outwardly from the respective outboard side from substantially the inner peripheral end thereof to the outer peripheral end thereof whereby the vanes are adapted to act on fluid adjacent to pulley to tend to cool the pulley with the fluid.

An endless power transmission V-belt construction and method of making the same are provided, the belt construction being formed mainly of polymeric material and having rounded top and bottom teeth respectively extending along the length of the top and bottom surfaces of the belt construction, the belt construction comprising a tension section having the top surface, a compression section having the bottom surface, and a load-carrying section disposed intermediate the tension section and the compression section. The bottom to top tooth pitch ratio of the belt construction, the bottom to top tooth depth ratio thereof, and the belt thickness to flex thickness ratio thereof may be varied in specific instances to optimize performance in specific uses.

Endless power transmission V-belt constructions

An endless power transmission V-belt construction and method of making the same are provided, the belt construction being formed mainly of polymeric material and having rounded top and bottom teeth respectively extending along the length of the top and bottom surfaces of the belt construction, the belt construction comprising a tension section having the top surface, a compression section having the bottom surface, and a load-carrying section disposed intermediate the tension section and the compression section. The quotient of the top width to belt thickness is approximately 2.0, the quotient of the bottom to top tooth pitch is approximately 1.40, the quotient of the bottom to top tooth depth is approximately 1.77 and the quotient of the belt thickness to flex thickness is approximately 3.98.

Endless power transmission V-belt construction and method of making the

A manual tool for cutting a polymeric endless power transmission belt body and method of cutting employing such a tool are provided wherein the belt body has a plurality of endless V-belt elements fastened in spaced side-by-side relation by a common endless structure to define alternating projections and grooves in the belt body and wherein the tool comprises, a cutting knife for cutting the endless structure to define a plurality of endless belts each having at least one belt element, a support which is adapted to be disposed in a stationary position and has the cutting knife fastened thereon at a fixed location, and means for supporting and guiding the belt body during cutting with the supporting and guiding means being supported on the support and with the knife cooperating with the supporting and guiding means to provide precise cutting through the structure at the base of a particular groove upon moving the belt body relative to the knife with the knife in cutting engagement with the structure.

Method for cutting polymeric belt body

An endless power transmission V-belt construction and method of making the same are provided, the belt construction being formed mainly of polymeric material and having rounded top and bottom teeth respectively extending along the length of the top and bottom surfaces of the belt construction, the belt construction comprising a tension section having the top surface, a compression section having the bottom surface, and a load-carrying section disposed intermediate the tension section and the compression section. The quotient of the bottom to top tooth pitch ratio of the belt construction is approximately 1.40 and the quotient of the bottom to top tooth depth ratio thereof is approximately 1.77 while the quotient of the belt thickness to flex thickness ratio thereof is approximately 3.98.
