The present invention is directed to a splitter or hub that provides plural ports for communicating MoCA signals between devices. More particularly, the present invention relates to a passive splitter to communicate MoCA signals between a gateway/amplifier port and customer devices, or a passive hub to communicate MoCA signals between customer devices. The splitter or hub includes a resistive splitter network and may include a MoCA passing filter and a test port.

A bi-directional RF signal amplifier includes a housing with an RF input port. A power divider network within the housing terminates to a plurality of active RF output ports. An active communications path connects the RF input port to the power divider network. A passive communications path connects the RF input port to a passive RF output port. A MoCA input/output port is provided on the housing. A MoCA signal path connects the power divider network to the MoCA input/output port, and a MoCA pass filter is located along the MoCA signal path. In another embodiment, a passive splitter includes a housing with an RF input port, a power divider network, and a plurality of CATV/MoCA RF output ports. A CATV communications path connects the RF input port to the power divider network. A MoCA input/output port is provided on the housing. A MoCA signal path connects the power divider network to the MoCA input/output port, and a MoCA pass filter is located along the MoCA signal path.

MoCA connectivity between RF amplifiers or splitter devices

The present invention is directed to a bi-directional RF signal amplifier that includes both an active communications path and a passive communications path. The circuitry is simplified and the housing size is reduced by having one port which functions as part of the active communications path when the bi-directional RF signal amplifier is powered, and that functions as part of the passive communications path when the bi-directional RF signal amplifier is unpowered.

Common mode noise can exist on an outer conductor of a female F-type port of a RF-device, like a cable modem box or cable TV set-top box. The present invention utilizes a jumper wire attached to an electrically conductive connector, having a shape and size to fit around a base of the F-type female coaxial port. The jumper wire carries the common mode noise away from the outer conductor of the port. In a first embodiment, the jumper wire is connected to a ground line of a household outlet. In a second embodiment, the jumper wire dissipates the noise signal by interacting with one or more ferrites. In a third embodiment, the jumper wire carries the noise signal to a shielding layer of a coaxial cable, which may further carry the noise signal to one or more ferrites or a ground connection.

A CATV & MoCA splitter has an input and at least one output that is 'CATV & MoCA' and at least one output that is 'MoCA only.' The splitter functions as a building block to provide a customizable installation that supplies the needed number of &#x201c;CATV & MoCA&#x201d; outputs and the needed number of &#x201c;MoCA only&#x201d; outputs. The splitter includes a housing with first, second and third coaxial ports attached to the housing. In one embodiment, the second coaxial port is connected to the first coaxial port via a power divider so that all frequencies presented to the first coaxial port can pass to the second coaxial port, and vice versa. A high pass filter, which passes only MoCA signals, connects the power divider and third coaxial port.

An addressable optical network interface unit includes an optical input and a radio frequency output. The unit also includes an optical-to-electrical conversion circuit that converts optical signals received at the optical input into radio frequency signals, a directional coupler that is coupled to an output of the optical-to-electrical conversion circuit and a radio frequency receiver that is coupled to a first output of the directional coupler. The radio frequency receiver receives radio frequency signals input through the optical input. The unit also includes a controller that is coupled to the radio frequency receiver, and a filter circuit that is coupled to a second output of the directional coupler. The filter circuit includes multiple signal paths that filter out signals in different frequency ranges. Switches are provided that select one of the signal paths through the filter circuit. These switches are controlled in response to data contained in the radio frequency signal. The controller is configured to generate control signals that control the settings of at least some of the switches based at least in part on a filter control signal received through the optical input.

A network interface unit includes an input for receiving downstream signals from an optical fiber, an optical pathway leading from the input, a laser connected to the optical pathway for transmitting upstream signals in a first wavelength band, and a receiver for receiving downstream signals in a second wavelength band that doesn't overlap with the first wavelength band. A first filter is provided for filtering signals in a third wavelength band from the optical pathway before signals in the third wavelength band reach the receiver, and a second filter is provided between the input and the laser for filtering signals in a fourth wavelength band from the optical pathway, the fourth wavelength band not overlapping with the first wavelength band or the third wavelength band, and an arrangement is also provided for preventing processing of the fourth wavelength band downstream of the second filter.
