Described are light generating devices employing ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes and one or more UV active materials, such as UV reflective materials, UV scattering materials, and UV transparent materials. A UV light generation system, may include a plurality of UV light emitting diodes arranged across a surface having a diffuse UV reflective layer. The UV light generation system may be arranged to enclose a fluid pathway or may be arranged as a liner of a container or vessel for use in disinfecting, purifying, or sterilizing fluid, particles or objects in the fluid pathway, container, or vessel by exposure of the fluid, particles or objects to UV light generated by the UV light emitting diodes.

A process is provided for creating microstructure coupling guides for aligning photonic devices with optical signal carrying apparatuses. The process includes applying a photoresist to a semiconductor material, spinning the semiconductor material, baking the semiconductor material, exposing the photoresist, baking the semiconductor material a second time, and developing the resist. The process creates a microstructure that acts as an integral guide to align and maintain the relative position between an optical signal carrying apparatus and a photonic device.

The invention relates to a semiconductor diode capable of performing the dual functions of emission and detection of optical signals. The diode can be used in a bidirectional optical communication link alternating between transmitting and receiving optical signals. In particular, the structure is of a light emitting diode for emission and a photodiode for detection. The invention is a semiconductor p-n junction single heterostructure diode which can operate efficiently as a light emitting diode (LED) when a forward bias voltage is applied and as a light detecting photodiode when a zero or a small reverse bias voltage is applied.
