A micromechanical device comprising one or more electronically movable structure sets comprising for each set a first electrode supported on a substrate and a second electrode supported substantially parallel from said first electrode. Said second electrode is movable with respect to said first electrode whereby an electric potential applied between said first and second electrodes causing said second electrode to move relative to said first electrode a distance X, (X), where X is a nonlinear function of said potential, (V). Means are provided for linearizing the relationship between V and X.

Method for linearizing deflection of a MEMS device using binary electrodes and voltage modulation

Method and apparatus for forming an array of reflective elements for spatial light modulation. The array includes a substrate supporting electronically addressable actuators, each associated with a corresponding reflective element, a coupling attaching each actuator to the corresponding reflective element to place each reflective element in a substantially planar surface. Each electronically addressable actuator responds to predetermined addressing from a processing circuit to reposition the corresponding reflective element out of the planar surface a predetermined distance identified in the predetermined electronic addressing.

MEMS-based spatial-light modulator with integrated electronics

A method and apparatus are described for detecting defects in a condom, protective glove or other similar product during manufacture. The product to be tested is situated on an electrically conductive mandrel, the shape of the mandrel corresponding to the shape of the product. Ions of air are generated and driven toward the mandrel. The flow of ions of air into the mandrel through any holes or tears in the product is detected by measuring the constant current flow through the mandrel. Thickness variations in the product are detected by measuring the duration of the transient current flow through the mandrel.

Method and apparatus for detecting leaks in electrically-insulative

This invention relates to an acoustic pulse response system for determining the shape of the nasopharyngeal cavity in a subject by introducing an acoustic impulse through a wave tube into the respective nasal cavities of the subject. The acoustic signals and acoustic reflections thereof with respect to each one of said nasal cavities with both open and closed velums are detected by a microphone located in a wall of the tube, the microphone generating electrical signals proportional to both the impulse and acoustic reflections. The length of the nasal septum is determined, and the value of the area-distance function of the nasopharyngeal cavity is computed from the electrical signals and the length of the nasal septum.
