A non-conductive composite insert is provided between conductive portions, useful, for example, in downhole EM telemetry applications as an external 'gap sub' in a drill collar, or as a sonde-based internal gap. In a preferred embodiment, the composite is made from a glass-fiber reinforced plastic, and separates non-magnetic conductive portions made from stainless steel. The composite insert provides a slanted or tapered transition into the conductive portions at either or both ends of the insert. The transitions on the composite insert may comprise one or more tapered surfaces, which may be male or female in configuration with respect to matching transitions on the conductive portions. The transitions may be bonded together by adhesive, or alternatively may be threaded.

Composite isolation joint for gap sub or internal gap

A gap sub comprises at least one electrically isolating threaded joint in a conductive tubular collar. The threads of the joints are isolated by a non-conductive coating. The shoulders of the joints are separated by an isolating ring. Annular faces on the ring make contact with the shoulders in the joints. The ring is made of conductive material with a non-conductive coating deployed on (1) at least one of the ring's annular faces, and (2) the interior surface of the ring. An annular recess in the collar prevents electrical contact between collar sections nearby the ring on either side of at least one threaded joint.

Isolation ring on gap sub

An orienting hanger comprises a generally tubular inner hanger, a generally tubular outer collar, and a cylindrical tool adapter. Box and pin connections at the ends of the outer collar enable the orienting hanger assembly to be threadably inserted into a BHA. One end of the tool adapter is disposed to threadably engage the inner hanger, and the other end is disposed to threadably receive an MWD tool. The inner hanger is disposed to be received into the outer collar such that annular shoulders abut, whereupon the MWD tool is suspended from the inner hanger. The inner hanger provides structure to enable the high side of the MWD tool to be aligned with the zero degrees tool face on the BHA and then locked into that position within the outer collar.

Orienting hanger assembly for deploying MWD tools

Methods are disclosed for deploying a retrievable MWD tool in a non-retrievable environment and aligning a selected orientation of an MWD tool, as deployed in a bottom hole assembly (BHA), with a selected orientation on a tool face on the BHA. Preferred methods include providing an orienting hanger assembly (comprising a tubular inner hanger, a tubular outer collar, and a tool adapter) and attaching an MWD tool to the tool adapter. The outer collar is inserted into a BHA and the selected tool face orientation is marked on the outer collar. The inner hanger is rotated within the outer collar to align (via the alignment notch) the high side of the MWD tool to the tool face orientation transferred onto the outer collar. The inner hanger is locked to the outer collar.

Processes for enhancing blown film processability and the blown films formed thereby are described herein. One embodiment of the processes generally includes providing a first propylene based heterophasic copolymer having a first melt flow rate, modifying the first propylene based heterophasic copolymer to form a second heterophasic polymer having a second melt flow rate, wherein the second melt flow rate is greater than the first melt flow rate, contacting the first heterophasic polymer, the second heterophasic copolymer or a combination thereof with a plurality of additives, wherein the plurality of additives include a nucleator, polyethylene and mineral oil to form a modified heterophasic copolymer and blowing the modified heterophasic polymer into a film.

Modified resins for blown film

A heat resistant film that comprises at least one layer that comprises a high crystallinity propylene polymer having a melt flow rate of from 0.5 g/10 min. to 15 g/10 min. and a xylene solubles of less than 3.5%. The propylene polymer may have a melting point above 158&#xb0; C. The heat resistant film may further comprise at least a second layer, which may be a heterophasic random copolymer. The heat resistant film may be, for example, a blown film, a cast film, or an oriented film, and may be used in such articles of manufacture as construction films, retort packaging, and laminated articles.

Heat resistant polypropylene film

An opaque polymer film is prepared by admixing high crystalline polypropylene with a microvoid causing filler and extruding to form a sheet that is then biaxially stretched to form an opaque film. End uses for these films include soda bottles, candy wrappers and synthetic paper.

Opaque films for use in packaging

A blown film that comprises polypropylene that has a melt flow rate of 1.8 to 14.0 g/10 min. and a melting point of at least 115&#xb0; C. The blown film has a haze of less than 10% and a gloss of greater than 70%. The blown film may be co-extruded with a medium density polyethylene or 15 wt % of an impact copolymer. A clarifier may also be incorporated. The blown film that comprises polypropylene is produced on a standard air cooled blown film line.

Polypropylene blown film

A polymeric composition having a MFR of less than 2 g/10 min. which when formed into a film has an oxygen transmission rate of equal to or greater than 300 cc/100 in/24 h at 73&#xb0; F. and 0% relative humidity per ASTM D 3895 and a water vapor transmission rate of equal to or greater than 0.5 g/100 in/24 hrs at 100&#xb0; F. and 100% relative humidity per ASTM F 1249. A polymeric film having a 2% secant modulus in the machine direction of 300 MPa to 700 MPa; an oxygen transmission rate of greater than 300 cc/100 in/24 h at 100&#xb0; F., a water vapor transmission rate of greater than 0.5 g/100 in/24 hrs at 100&#xb0; F. and 100% relative humidity; an Elmendorf tear strength in the MD of from 50 g to 400 g; an Elmendorf tear strength in the transverse direction of from 150 g to 400 g, a dart drop strength of from 200 g to about 500 g, a haze of from 0% to 85% and, gloss at 45&#xb0; of from 5% to 70%.

Breathable films

Polymerization processes are described herein. The polymerization processes generally include introducing a catalyst system to a reaction zone, introducing an olefin monomer to the reaction zone, contacting the olefin monomer with the catalyst system to form a polyolefin and contacting the polyolefin with a quench agent, wherein the quench agent is at least partially soluble in the olefin monomer.

Polypropylene having reduced residual metals

A heat-seal polymer film and method of forming such film is provided. The heat-seal film is formed from metallocene-catalyzed isotactic random copolymers of propylene and at least one other Cto Calpha olefin, such as ethylene random. Such films show improved heat-seal characteristics, such as reduced seal initiation temperatures (SIT's) and improved heat-seal strength, as well as other improved properties.

Heat-seal films and method of manufacture

A polymer blend and a method of making the same are provided. The polymer blend includes an ethylene-propylene (C-C) random copolymer and a modifier selected from the group consisting of a metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene-based copolymer, a metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene-based terpolymer, and a syndiotactic polypropylene homopolymer. The polymer blend may also include an organic peroxide for visbreaking the polymer blend. An end use article is made from the foregoing polymer blend. The end use article may be, for example, a film, an injection molded article, a compression molded article, a thermoformed article, and a fiber. The end use article is desirably a film having an Elmendorf tear strength of at least about 300 g/ply in the machine and transverse directions.
