Substituting video on demand (VOD) content items for video content recorded onto a digital video recorder (DVR) or selected to be recorded onto a DVR is provided. Oftentimes, there is overlap between content that a user has recorded on his DVR or is selecting to record onto his DVR and video content that is available in a VOD library. When a user selects to record video content, selects to play recorded content, when a storage space reaches a predetermined capacity, or according to a predetermined time interval, a query may be performed to search for VOD content items that match recorded content or content selected to be recorded. If a match is found, the VOD content item may be substituted for the DVR recording. When a user selects to playback the content, the content may be streamed from the VOD library. Advertising may also be inserted.

Substitution of items in a central video library for personally recorded video content

Systems and methods are disclosed for providing user communication. First an invitation input may be received from a first user. The invitation input may comprise a recommendation to a second user to take an action regarding content to be delivered over a content delivery system. Then, the invitation input may be transmitted to the second user. Next, an acceptance input may be received from the second user. The acceptance input may comprise an acceptance to the invitation input. The acceptance input may then be transmitted to the first user in response to receiving the acceptance input.

Providing user communication

Content placeholder markers may be provided. A request to insert a placeholder marker may be received during output of a content asset to a device. If memory storage is available to record the content asset, the asset may be recorded. Otherwise, the placeholder marker may be stored and/or used to resume playback of the content asset from another source.
