A light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system includes light sources configured to generate separate beams of light, a lens array configured to receive the separate beams of light from the light sources and to collimate the separate beams of light into collimated outgoing light that is directed toward an examined area of interest, a light sensitive detector configured to sense reflection of at least part of the collimated outgoing light, and one or more processors configured to determine a distance to one or more objects off which the at least part of the collimated outgoing light was reflected toward the light sensitive detector. The one or more processors are configured to determine the distance based on the reflection of the at least part of the collimated outgoing light.

LiDAR system and method

A powder melting device for an additive manufacturing system is provided. The powder melting device includes at least one laser device configured to generate at least one energy beam for forming at least one melt pool in a layer of powdered material. The powder melting device also includes at least two optical elements configured to dynamically induce beam distortion in the at least one energy beam to modify a beam spot incident on the layer of powdered material. The at least two optical elements are configured to induce at least one of an aspect ratio adjustment of the at least one energy beam, an optical powder redistribution between a periphery and a center of the at least one energy beam, and a rotation of the at least one energy beam.

System and methods for fabricating a component with a laser device

A lens array assembly includes plural lens elements each configured to receive incoming light from one or more light sources. The lens elements include biconic refractive elements on first sides of the lens elements and including diffractive elements on opposite, second sides of the lens elements. The lens elements are configured to change directions of the incoming light received from the one or more light sources such that outgoing light emanating from the lens elements is collimated in a first direction but diverges along a different, second direction.

Lens array assembly and method for making the same

A laser navigational system for a vehicle having a lighting assembly configured for emission of light. A lens array assembly receives incoming light from the lighting assembly and changes the direction of the incoming light received from the lighting assembly such that the outgoing light emanating from the lens array assembly is collimated in a first direction but diverges along a different, second direction. A scanning unit aligns with the lighting assembly to direct the collimated beam in two orthogonal directions. The lighting assembly, the lens array assembly and the scanning unit are configured to direct the light to form a visual beacon that guides navigation of the vehicle to a location.

Disclosed is a low-cost, portable photo thermal spectroscopy (PTS) reader for use in detecting the presence of diseases in the bodily fluid of affected patients. The PTS reader is designed to be durable, easy to use and provide readings from the Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) with rapid results. Also provided are methods of use.

Fixed optics photo-thermal spectroscopy reader and method of use

The present approach relates to the synchronization of frame acquisition by a camera with an external event or trigger despite the camera lacking external control or synchronization capabilities. For example, inexpensive and/or consumer grade camera typically lack a control interface to explicitly synchronize with an external trigger event or external device. The present approach allows synchronization of such a camera lacking external synchronization capabilities with an external event or device.

Synchronous sampling methods for infrared cameras

Provided here are microscope objectives that include a first plurality of lenses positioned within the passageway on a sample end of the microscope objective and a second plurality of lenses positioned within the passageway and spaced apart from the first plurality of lenses and opposite the sample end such that the first plurality of lenses and the second plurality of lenses are aligned along an imaging axis and such that each individual lens is rotationally symmetrical about the imaging axis. Also included is a motor configured to move a carrier along the imaging axis to change a distance between each lens of first plurality of lenses relative to at least one lens of the second plurality of lenses.

A system is presented. The system includes an absorption cell filled-with a gas-mixture, a mirror-cum-window comprising a first portion that acts as a first mirror and a second portion that acts as a first window, a second mirror, a plurality of radiation sources to generate a plurality of light beams directed into the absorption cell through the first window followed by reflection of the plurality of light beams between the first mirror and the second mirror to irradiate the gas-mixture resulting in generation of a plurality of transmitted light beams passing out of the absorption cell through the second window, a detector that detects at least one characteristic of the plurality of transmitted light beams resulting in generation of one or more response signals, and a processing subsystem that analyzes the gas-mixture at least based on the one or more response signals.

Methods and systems to analyze a gas-mixture

Optically patterned waveguides and systems employing optically patterned waveguides are provided. The optically patterned waveguide is configured for use in a lighting system and arranged perpendicular to an overhead structure, such as a ceiling. The optically patterned waveguide includes major surfaces that are patterned with a plurality of elongated facets formed into the major surfaces and extending in a direction parallel to the length of the waveguide. The optically patterned waveguide provides illumination patterns having increased uniformity.

Disclosed are method and apparatus for forming multiple images of an object comprising a plurality of depth segments. An optical system comprises an infinity optical subsystem and a multi-image optical subsystem. The infinity optical subsystem is configured to receive light from the object and form a first image focussed at infinity. A multi-image optical subsystem is configured to receive the first image and form multiple images via multiple focussing lenses. Each multiple image can correspond to a different depth segment. A portion of the light from the first image can also be filtered before entering a focussing lens. Multiple images under different filtering conditions, corresponding to different depth segments or to the same depth segment, can be formed.

Method and apparatus for forming multiple images

An optical detection system is provided for generating and detecting a beam of electromagnetic radiation having intensity. The optical detection system comprises a source for producing the beam of electromagnetic radiation; and a body, that is at least partially transparent and comprises an ATR-sensor layer on at least a portion of the body, having an entrance surface for the beam of electromagnetic radiation, an internally or externally reflective surface that reflects the beam transmitted through the entrance surface, and an exit surface through which the beam, reflected from the second surface, exits the transparent body. The optical detection system may further comprise a distribution device between the beam source and the body; wherein the distribution device redistributes the intensity of the beam from a non-uniform intensity distribution to a substantially uniform intensity distribution; and a detector that detects the beam of electromagnetic radiation exiting the body.

The present application thus describes a solar-thermal power generation plant that includes one or more towers; a plurality of heliostats disposed around each of the one or more towers; a direct solar evaporator mounted at an elevated position on each of the one or more towers, the heliostats being configured to reflect solar radiation toward the direct solar evaporator such that concentrated solar radiation heats a receiving surface on the direct solar evaporator; and a heat engine mounted at an elevated position on each of the one or more towers, attached to the direct solar evaporator, and configured to use the heat from the receiving surface on the direct solar evaporator to generate electricity.

A wide angle hybrid refractive-diffractive endoscope objective is provided. The objective comprises a negative meniscus lens having a first surface and a second surface; a stop adjacent to the negative meniscus lens; a positive lens adjacent to the negative lens and having a first surface and a second surface; and a hybrid refractive-diffractive element adjacent to the positive lens and having a first surface and a second surface, wherein one of the first surface, or the second surface comprises a diffractive surface, wherein the objective has an effective focal length in a range from about 0.8 mm to about 1.6 mm.
