The present disclosure relates to a data storage device having a hypervolume accessible by a plurality of servers operating on two or more data storage systems, a first physical volume, associated with the hypervolume, located at a first data storage system, and a second physical volume, associated with the hypervolume, located at a second storage system. The hypervolume directs input/output (I/O) from the servers to a primary physical volume comprising either the first or second physical volume, and the primary physical volume may be changed, transparently to the servers, to the other of the first or second physical volume. The present disclosure, in another embodiment, relates to a method for moving operation of a storage device from one data storage location to a second data storage location. A hypervolume is used to redirect input/output (I/O) from the a plurality of servers from the one physical volume to another.

Accessing some storage-area networks (SANs) requires a client computer to include a special electronic component, known as a host bus adapter (HBA). However, the present inventor recognized that conventional host bus adapters add considerable expense to the cost of accessing the storage-area network. Accordingly, the present inventor devised a host bus adapter that is implemented in software and thus referred to as a 'virtual' host bus adapter. One exemplary embodiment of the virtual host bus adapter includes a hardware-emulation module that makes the virtual host bus adapter appear to operating system environments as a conventional host bust adapter with dedicated hardware.

System, method, and software for a virtual host bus adapter in a storage-area network

A method and apparatus is presented providing high-performance lossless data compression implemented in hardware for improving network communications. A compression module useful in a switching platform is also presented capable of compressing data stored in buffer memory. Instructions for a compression task are assigned to the compression module by a microprocessor writing a control block to a queue in stored local memory. The control block informs the compression module of the size and location of the unprocessed data, as well as a location in the buffer memory for storing the processed data and the maximum allowed size for the compressed data. Using this technique, the microprocessor can limit the compression of data to those data streams allowing compression, to those segments that are susceptible to compression, and to those segments that are large enough to show a transmission speed improvement via compression.
