A thermal interface device () includes a base member () and a pocket () which is filled with a thermally conductive material or medium such as diamond dust suspended in a solvent such as propylene glycol or a thermally conductive material such as thermally conductive rubber. The pocket () is hermitically sealed to the base member () in order to keep the thermally conductive material within the pocket. The filled pocket () forms a deformable 'pillow' having a high thermal conductance. The deformable pocket () can contour to the shape of a device it is pressed against such as an electronic device undergoing testing.

Improved optical mode mixers for use in conjunction with optical fibers and devices incorporating optical fibers are disclosed and claimed. The optical mode mixers are formed from a coherent, orderly bundle of numerous small diameter optical fibers in a longitudinally aligned, parallel array. The mode mixer is optically linked to the fiber optic cable and effectively reduces undesirable high order modes of light transmission while eliminating alignment sensitivity. The coherent fiber optic bundles may be as short as ten wavelengths of light in length and will have a diameter substantially equal to that of the fiber optic cable to which they are coupled.

A system for monitoring and controlling a temperature of a heating element in a thermodilution catheter to maintain it within safe physiological limits includes a calibration circuit, a device for controlling the supply of power to the system, a relay between the calibration circuit and the heating element for switching power therebetween, a transistorized voltage detecting circuit for determining whether power has been supplied to the calibration circuit, and a device responsive to transistorized voltage detecting circuit to remove power from the system. Also, a method for monitoring and controlling a temperature of a thermodilution catheter-mounted heating element including providing a calibration circuit, switching a supply of power to either the calibration circuit or the heating element, monitoring the supply of power to the calibration circuit, and removing power from either the calibration circuit or the heating element in response to the monitored power at the calibration circuit.
