A cable assembly is disclosed. The cable assembly includes a printed circuit board (PCB) including a plurality of alternating ground pads and groups of signal pads, and a cable comprising a plurality of spaced apart differential pairs. Each differential pair defines a stripped section and an unstripped section, and the stripped sections terminate at corresponding signal pads of a corresponding group of signal pads of the PCB. An electrically conductive shield includes a cover portion disposed on and covering at least a portion of the unstripped sections of the insulated conductors and a plurality of spaced apart walls. Each wall is disposed between the stripped sections of the insulated conductors of two adjacent differential pairs and extending from the cover portion to, and making electrical contact with, a corresponding ground pad disposed between the groups of signal pads corresponding to the adjacent differential pairs.

In transverse cross section, the cover portions of the polymeric films in combination surround the conductor sets, and the pinched portions of the polymeric films in combination form pinched portions of the cable on each side of the cable. When the cable is laid flat, a center-to-center spacing of the pair of insulated conductors for the first conductor set is &#x3c3;and a center-to-center spacing of the first and second conductor sets is &#x3a3;. &#x3a3;/&#x3c3;is less than 4.

A shielded electrical ribbon cable includes a plurality of conductor sets. Each conductor set is surrounded by a shield and includes two insulated conductors. First and second non-conductive polymeric layers are disposed on opposite sides of the cable. The polymeric layers include cover portions and pinched portions. The cover portions surround the plurality of conductor sets, and the pinched portions form pinched portions on each side of the cable. The cable includes a transition portion on each side of the cable. At least one of the polymeric layers has a radius of curvature of at least 50 microns across an entire width of the cable. For at least one of the polymeric layers, the ratio of the minimum radius of curvature in the cover portions to the minimum radius of curvature in the transition portions is from 2 to 15.

A shielded cable includes a plurality of conductor sets. Each conductor set is substantially surrounded by a shield and includes two insulated conductors. The plurality of conductor sets includes adjacent first and second conductor sets. First and second non-conductive polymeric layers are disposed on opposite sides of the cable and include cover portions and pinched portions. The cover portions in combination substantially surround the plurality of conductor sets. The pinched portions in combination form pinched portions on each side of the cable. A first conductor of the first conductor set is nearest the second conductor set, and a second conductor of the second conductor set is nearest the first conductor set. The first and second conductors have a spacing S and respective outer dimensions Dand D. S/Dmin is from 1.7 to 2. Dmin is the lesser of Dand D

A shielded electrical ribbon cable includes conductor sets each including a pair of twisted conductors, and first and second shielding films on opposite sides of the cable including cover portions substantially surrounding each conductor set, and pinched portions on each side of each conductor set. S is a minimum center-to-center spacing between nearest insulated conductors of two adjacent conductor sets, and Dmin is a minimum outer dimension of the nearest insulated conductors. S/Dmin is between 1.7 and 2.

A shielded electrical ribbon cable includes conductor sets each including two or more insulated conductors, each conductor set surrounded by a shielding film, and a first and second non-conductive polymeric films on opposite sides of the cable including cover portions and pinched portions. When the cable is laid flat, S/Dmin is in a range from 1.7 to 2, where S is a center-to-center spacing between nearest insulated conductors of two adjacent conductor sets, and Dmin is the lesser of the outer dimensions of such nearest insulated conductors.
