Hard imaging systems, articles of manufacture, and hard imaging methods are described. According to one aspect, a hard imaging system includes an image engine configured to form a hard image upon media, processing circuitry configured to access image data corresponding to the hard image, to process the image data to provide raster data, to output the raster data to the image engine, and to encapsulate the raster data, wherein the image engine is configured to form the hard image responsive to the raster data during a first imaging operation, and wherein the encapsulated raster data comprises data which may be utilized to generate the hard image formed by the image engine during a second imaging operation different than the first imaging operation.

An apparatus and method for calibrating a peripheral device having a scanner and document feeder is provided. A target page is printed having a target at a known location on the page. The target page is then fed into the document feeder for scanning by the scanner. A calibration value is determined by determining the lateral position of the scanned target within the scanner. The calibration value is then used to adjust the lateral position of a scan line window width of the scanner to scan substantially only the entire width of a document page to be scanned.

Systems and methods for automatically selecting digital sending functionality are provided. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving input of a character, determining the nature of the character, determining whether a digital sending trigger has been satisfied, and where a digital sending trigger has been satisfied, automatically selecting a digital sending functionality based upon the type of the trigger. In a preferred embodiment, the invention comprises a multi-function peripheral device capable of photocopying, e-mailing, and faxing documents. The device comprises a device operation module adapted to: evaluate characters received via the control panel, determine whether the user desires to photocopy, e-mail, or fax based upon the received characters, and automatically enable and initiate the desired functionality.
