Provided are a payment card, system and method for storing and reading tokenized payment account information from a payment card. In an exemplary embodiment, a payment card may include a substrate forming a body of the payment card, and an electronic chip attached to or included in the substrate. According to various exemplary embodiments, the electronic chip may include a storage storing tokenized payment account information corresponding to a payment account linked to the payment card. The electronic chip may be read by a payment terminal and may provide the tokenized payment information to the payment terminal during reading.

At a remote server, an indication is obtained that a prospective transit rider has come into geographic proximity of a particular transit boarding area. At the remote server, an authorization request is dispatched to an issuer of a payment card account associated with the prospective transit rider, based on the remote server accessing a database based on the indication. At the remote server, a response to the authorization request is obtained from the issuer. If the response is affirmative, dispatch of an electronic ticket to a portable electronic device of the prospective transit rider is initiated.

Transaction data is gathered for a plurality of successful payment device transactions in a first environment. The transaction data is filtered to identify successful payment device transactions associated with payment devices for which offline authentication is not supported, to obtain a whitelist. The whitelist is made available to at least one of (1) a merchant in a second, different environment, and (2) a third party acting on behalf of such a merchant.

A communications network places in data communication an access point controlling access to a controlled access area; a server; and a medium-long range wireless communications transceiver. The transceiver detects presence of a portable electronic device outside the access point. The server obtains an indication that a user of the portable electronic device has been authenticated to the portable electronic device and initiates a payment approval process which is completed before the user seeks to pass through the access point. Based at least in part on the authentication and success of the payment approval process, the server provides to the access point an electronic token indicating that the user, bearing the portable electronic device, is to be allowed to pass through the access point into the controlled access area.
