A method for increasing performance of a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes determining () quality of service parameters that will result in a reduced likelihood that an application assigned the determined quality of service parameters will be scheduled for transmission, identifying () an application to be provided service that is less than best effort, and assigning () the determined one or more quality of service parameters to the identified application. In an embodiment, the method further assigns () a dedicated bearer to the identified application and either does not schedule () the dedicated bearer at all or schedules () the dedicated bearer less frequently compared to a frequency of scheduling a default bearer.

Method and apparatus for increasing performance of a wireless communication system

An apparatus and method for establishing a session in a communication network supporting multimedia group calls. A first step () includes determining streams for a multimedia group call by the service entity. A next step () includes providing an indicator of the resources required for at least one stream of the group call by the service entity. A next step () includes paging the subscriber unit with the indicator for the at least one stream of the group call by the service entity. A next step () includes ascertaining the capabilities and resources of the subscriber unit. A next step () includes establishing a channel for only those streams of the group call for which the capabilities and resources of the subscriber unit are sufficient with respect to the indicator for those streams.

Joining a session in a communication network supporting multimedia group calls

A method for providing dynamic group call among a group of users both wireless (-) and wireline () places the selectability of the call in the hands of an originating user (). An originating user () may make a fixed number of entries (). The originating user () can create a dynamic group call, add a group call list for later execution, add a member to the group call list, or create a dynamic group call list and immediately execute a group call (). The method for dynamic group call also provides for selecting a time to live for each group call entry () in database (). This parameter time to live is directly selectable by the originating user () or the server. In addition, any member to a previous or existing group call may rejoin or reestablish the dynamic group call ().

A proactive speculation method decreases the call setup time for private calls () and selective dynamic group calls (). In a push-to-talk dispatch network () an originating mobile unit () sends a wake-up packet () to the dispatch network (). Prior to initiating the push-to-talk function, the target mobile units () receive a wake-up packet () from network (). Thereby, prior to establishing the push-to-talk function, each of the mobile units in the push-to-talk call have been coupled via RF links. If the originating mobile unit has a current IP address, direct wake-up packets () may be sent.

An arrangement for compressing () and uncompressing () system set up messages between a client and a server employing Session Initiation Protocol transmits a template () between client () and server (). A template is pre-placed () by clients or servers with other clients or servers. During execution time when a client requests services by connecting to a server only a minimal template () is transmitted from client to server. The server then reconstructs () the original uncompressed message.

For a push-to-talk function in a mobile communication system (), an indication is received () by a user () that the talking floor is available. Next, an uplink temporary block flow is established (). Prior to release of the uplink temporary block flow by the mobile communication system, a refresh message is sent () to hold the uplink temporary block flow. Downlink temporary block flows may also be refreshed by this method, or by the mobile communication system. Then the requesting user may enable the push-to-talk function. These techniques can improve talker arbitration and call setup delays for push-to-talk.

A determination is made whether a service provider () is capable of supporting at least one service for one of a plurality of subscriber units (). The determination is based on whether the service provider has sufficient processing capabilities and memory to receive the service processing software from the subscriber unit and/or whether the service provider is authorized, based on communication system policies to process the particular service request for this subscriber. If the service provider is capable, the subscriber unit provides service processing logic (e.g., the service processing application and/or user customization software) to the service provider. Upon receiving the service processing logic, the service provider stores it and eventually executes it to process the requested service for the subscriber units.

A wireless communication system comprises a connectionless packet network coupled to a plurality of sites that are in location areas . The sites join respective location area multicast addresses to receive messages from other sites in their location area. Communication units desiring to participate in talkgroup calls need only to register affiliation with a first site of the location area. Upon the first site receiving an affiliation message, it joins a payload multicast group address to receive payload for the talkgroup. In alternative embodiments, the first site sends, via the location area multicast address, either control message(s) or tunneled payload associated with the talkgroup call to secondary site(s) of the location area. The sites initiate paging sequences to determine whether communication units at their sites desire to participate in the call and, based on the responses, the sites may deliver stored payload and/or join the payload multicast group address to receive payload for the call. In this manner, a centralized entity such as a VLR is not needed to keep track of communication units in the location area.

System and methods for distributed connection and mobility processing in a multicast IP network incorporating multi-cell location areas

A method and system for optimal radio channel management in a distributed connection and transport network. The method includes the steps of determining the quality of service required by a communication session, determining whether transport resources are available for immediate use by the communication session, and queuing the communication session for assignment to transport resources in accordance with the quality of service required and the availability of transport resources for immediate use. The system includes a set of assignable transport resources, an interface for requesting a communication session, a detection processor in communication with the interface for determining the quality of service required by the session, a resource processor in communication with the detection processor determining whether transport resources are available for immediate use by the session, and a queuing processor in communication with the resource processor holding the communication session for prioritized allocation to the transport resources.
