Ink compositions and method of making the same are disclosed. A disclosed example ink composition includes a liquid vehicle, a colorant system and polyurethane vinyl hybrid latexes. Also disclosed is a method of using such ink composition containing polyurethane vinyl hybrid latexes.

An aqueous ink-jet ink composition for printing on offset media is disclosed comprising an ink colorant, an effective amount of at least one surfactant, and an effective amount of at least one aprotic polar solvent wherein the solvent is comprised of molecules having a molecular weight from 40 to 1500. Optionally, an effective amount of a non-aprotic polar solvent can be added. Such formulations include effective amounts of an ink colorant and a nonionic surfactant having an HLB value from about 4 to 14. Optionally, additional nonionic surfactants, solvents, and binders can be added. Aqueous ink jet inks for use with commercial offset media and offset ink

Described is a color inkjet printer for optimum bleed prevention in a printer utilizing multiple black and color pens wherein there is provided one print cartridge for dispensing black ink onto the printing medium and at least one print cartridge for dispensing color ink onto the printing medium. The cartridge for dispensing black ink contains an ink with little or no surface active agent while the cartridge for dispensing color ink contains a sufficient amount of surface active agent to reduce bleed between the colors. Moreover, the cartridge for dispensing black ink contains an ink which reacts with at least one and more preferably all inks contained in the cartridge for dispensing color ink. This reaction reduces bleed on images where the black print is adjacent to the color print to an acceptable level without requiring the black ink to contain surface active agents that would lead to inferior quality black text on the plain paper print medium. The reaction may be initiated by pH changes, reaction between the actual colorants, or reaction between one of the colorants and a component in the other ink.

The present invention provides a dynamic adjustment of the printed fluid volume for underprinting and/or overprinting pigment-based inks (or other inks) for speeding up the drying time of the pigment-based ink or improving its adherence to a medium. The invention identifies a characteristic in the printer that affects the optimum volume of under/overprinted fluid to be printed, such as pen temperature, operating frequency, operating life, ambient temperature, and ambient humidity, and varies the printed volume of the under/overprinted fluid accordingly.

The center-to-center spacing of pens containing a 'problematic' combination of inks is increased to introduce a relatively small additional time-delay in which those particular constituents are applied to the same or adjacent areas during a single pass, thereby providing a substantial improvement in print qualities (such as Halo or Bleed) on plain (untreated) and special purpose (matt, glossy, transparent) print media, without substantially increasing the throughput rate. The center-to-center spacing of a critical combination of pens is substantially greater than the width of a single pen, thereby providing an increased delay that is equal to the increased spacing divided by the traverse speed. Different delays are provided for different combinations of ink by arranging at least three pens in a fixed sequence with different fixed spacings between different combinations of pens, such that a greater spacing and thus a longer delay is associated with one or more combinations of inks which interact adversely on print quality, and a shorter delay with at least one combination of inks which interacts less adversely on print quality. In particular, if a particular pair of two pens is a 'problematic' combination requiring a longer delay and other pairs are 'safe' combinations requiring a shorter delay, the pair requiring the longer delay may be held in two non-adjacent compartments, possibly separated by one or more other pens. In one particular example, the order is KMCY, which provides an effective center-to-center spacing of 2 pen widths for the two 'problematic' combinations of KC and YM, and a center-to-center spacing of at least 1 pen width for the four safe combinations, thereby providing an economic solution to improve print qualities such as Halo and Bleed by increasing the center-to-center spacing of the pens associated with one or more 'problematic' combinations of inks, without any noticeable change in throughput rate.
