Methods are provided for producing an attrition-resistant, flexible, insulated wire well-suited for use in a high temperature operating environment. In one embodiment, the method includes the steps of providing a conductor, preparing a dielectric coating, applying the dielectric coating over the conductor, and curing the coated conductor. The dielectric coating includes an organic binder, a dielectric material, and an inorganic lubricant.

Attrition-resistant high temperature insulated wires and methods for the making thereof

An apparatus and method to electrocatalytically induce the decomposition of a liquid propellant for propulsion. This is accomplished by providing a reaction chamber filled with catalyst that has a first electrode, such as near the center, and the other electrode disposed away from the first electrode. A charge source that is capable of applying voltage is connected to the electrodes. When the reaction chamber is dosed with a propellant such as an aqueous based amine propellant, such as HAN, an electric current flows between the electrodes and the propellant. This initiates the decomposition of the propellant which is driven to completion by the catalyst bed in order to be used for power generation.

Electrocatalytically induced propellant decomposition

An anode structure comprises an array of carbon nanotubes having a diffusion side and a membrane side, and catalyst particles interspersed on inner surfaces of the membrane side of the carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes have an average diameter greater than the size of the hydrogen molecule but smaller than the size of the carbon monoxide molecule. Thus, hydrogen flowing toward the catalyst particles interspersed inside the carbon nanotubes are able to go through, while the flow of trace amounts of carbon monoxide contained in the hydrogen is blocked, preventing the poisoning of the catalyst particles by the carbon monoxide. A fuel cell utilizing the anode structure and a method for manufacturing the anode structure are also disclosed.

Methods of manufacturing insulated wires are provided. In an embodiment, by way of example only, a method includes drawing a conductive wire through a first pad to apply a layer of a first slurry onto the conductive wire, the first pad comprising a chamois leather material and including the first slurry disposed on the chamois leather material, wherein the first slurry comprises a first dielectric precursor material and a first binder having an organic component and heat treating the conductive wire to form the insulated wire.

Methods of manufacturing flexible insulated wires

Hydrophobic coating systems, suspensions for forming hydrophobic coatings, and methods for fabricating hydrophobic coatings are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, a hydrophobic coating system comprises a substrate and a hydrophobic coating disposed on the substrate. The hydrophobic coating comprises agglomerates formed of a fluorinated polymer and a plurality of chemically inert particles having an average size of no greater than about 0.1 &#x3bc;m. The hydrophobic coating exhibits contact angles greater than about 90 degrees.

Flexible insulated wires for use in a high temperature environment include a conductor and a coating over the conductor. The coating is formulated from a dielectric material and an organic binder having an organic component, wherein the organic component has been substantially decomposed from the coating during manufacture. The flexible insulated wire may be incorporated into a component.

A power source is provided for a resistive heating element that heats a catalyst bed of a reactor that receives a monopropellant fuel and reacts the fuel in the presence of the catalyst bed to provide hot gas driving a turbine. The power source is a capacitor that discharges its charge across the resistive heating element so that its temperature is elevated to a point where the reaction of the monopropellant fuel occurs. The power source may be used in airborne applications, such as emergency power systems for aircraft, where it is desirable to minimize the weight of the unit and to allow the unit to use safer monopropellant fuels.

A method for purifying breathing air using a carbon-based monolith structure impregnated with copper, silver, zinc, and molybdenum species and triethylenediamine, wherein the monolith structure is impregnated by a multiple step process. The method of impregnation results in a carbon-based monolith structure that purifies nuclear, biological, or chemical contaminants under conditions of high flow rate and low pressure drop.
