Systems and methods relate to a bus adapter for a storage network. The bus adaptor includes a context memory comprising a first storage for uncacheable exchange resource indicators (XRI) and a second storage for cacheable XRI. The bus adapter also includes a host backing store unit configured to provide access to the different tier memories present locally or externally in the host memory extension using several caching sub-units and with the capability of an optional pinning operation for the cacheable XRI based upon at least one of input/output phase, first in line up to a limit, a region of a virtual context address associated with the cacheable XRI indicators, a protocol associated with the cacheable XRI, a size of a transaction, or work queue information.

Adaptor storage system of and method

Systems and methods of communicating in a network use rate limiting. Rate limiting units (either receive side or transmit side) can perform rate limiting in response to a) a maximum number of bytes that can be solicited over a first period of time is exceeded, b) a maximum number of bytes that are outstanding over a second period of time is exceeded; or c) a maximum number of commands that are outstanding over a period of time is exceeded as part of CMD_RXRL. The CMD_RXRL can have three components (a) max bytes, b) outstanding bytes, c) outstanding commands. TXRL contains the component of max bytes or maximum number of bytes that can be transmitted over a third period of time to match the speed of a receive link, or any node or link through the network/fabric.

System and method for reducing congestion in a network

A number of command processing devices, architectures, and methods are described. One example of a command processing device is disclosed to include a classification engine configured to classify input commands, a sequencer in communication with the classification engine, one or more thread managers in communication with the sequencer, and one or more sub-processing engines in communication with each of the one or more thread managers. The sequencer may control staging of work across multiple threads and processing elements within threads. Each of the one or more thread managers are configured to delegate work to different sub-processing engines. Each of the one or more sub-processing engines are configured to perform sub-tasks in connection with completing processing of an input command received at the classification engine based on particular sub-tasks assigned to the one or more sub-processing engines by the one or more thread managers.

A system, method, and adaptor that facilitate data transmission are described. One example of the disclosed system facilitates the chip-to-chip transport of header descriptors and payloads. The system may include a source chip, a destination chip, and a set of queues describing buffer memory locations for staging header descriptors and payloads to be transferred from the source chip to the destination chip, where the set of queues are directly accessible to the source chip and to the destination chip.

System and method for port-to-port communications using direct memory access

A method, system, and apparatus are provided to avoid dropping data packets between computers coupled on a network. In one example, the system receives a plurality of data packets from one or more sending servers into a receive queue of a first network interface device (e.g., Fiber Channel host bus adapter) in a receiving server. The receive queue includes addresses to data buffers to store a predetermined number of data packets. The system monitors the number of data packets stored in the data buffers waiting for read out by a software application. The system detects a potential overflow of the receive queue in response to a number of unused data buffers of the receive queue. In response to detecting the potential overflow, the system performs preemptive actions to avoid dropping at least one of the plurality of data packets.

Avoiding dropped data packets on a network transmission

A method and system are provided for a storage area network including a plurality of virtual servers. In one example, the system sends a storage area network message to a second virtual server to prepare to perform one or more functions associated with the storage area network. The system copies a first cache table associated with a first cache memory and a first virtual server to a second cache table associated with a second cache memory and the second virtual server. The system uses a processor to execute one or more storage requests in the second virtual server, by using the first cache memory to support the performance of the one or more functions by the second virtual server, and without completely filling cache data into the second cache memory.

A method for a storage area network includes setting a priority indicator in a signal of a storage request to form a high priority storage request for a storage target in the storage area network. The method further includes transmitting the high priority storage request to the storage target before the transmission of at least one normal priority storage request. The high priority storage request then traverses the storage area network with a higher priority than a normal priority storage request to the storage target. Upon receiving the high priority storage request, the storage target executes the high priority storage request prior to executing at least one normal priority storage request.

A method of communication between networked devices in a local storage area network includes forming a message for in-band communication within a local storage area network. The message includes at least one major task and one or more associated sub tasks for execution within the storage area network. The method further includes establishing a first communication link at least between a first networked device and a second networked device in response to the formation of the message; transmitting the message from the first networked device to at least the second networked device within the local storage area network; and in response to receiving the message, executing the sub tasks within the message with a processor to complete the major task and support local storage area network functionality.

A method for managing power consumption by a network device is disclosed. The network device includes first and second ports, each of the first and second ports identified by a unique identifier and adapted to handle separate network traffic. The method includes verifying that the first and the second ports are connected to a common network end node; shutting off a link between the first port and the network end node; obtaining the unique identifier of the first port; creating, on the second port, a virtual port in response to the unique identifier of the first port; discovering the virtual port on the network device; and redirecting traffic formerly routed through the link through the virtual port.
