A system, method and program for adjusting a resource reservation for multimedia and normal traffic. An initialization file is used for storing data concerning a resource including a current maximum resource reservation for multimedia traffic. The user is presented the current maximum resource reservation, preferably in a graphical user interface to allow the user to adjust the resource reservation to a new maximum resource reservation in the initialization file. One preferred graphical user interface presents a range of resource reservations is represented as a scale and the current maximum resource reservation as a point on the scale. The resource reservation is used by the operating system or other software for reserving a portion of the resource. The remainder of the resource is allocated to normal traffic.

A method and system for the efficient determination of quality of service parameters for multimedia files accessed during operation of a specified multimedia application. Operation of the specified multimedia application is initiated. During operation, the multimedia application accesses multimedia files by reading the data stored in those files. The multimedia files are identified, and each read performed by the multimedia application is analyzed while each multimedia file is accessed. Quality of service parameters for each multimedia file may be automatically determined utilizing the analysis of each read of a multimedia file performed by the multimedia application.

A system and method ensure transmission of data elements between computers at a preselected quality of service. A computer in a layered reference model communication network requests a preselected quality of service for selected transmissions. An existing session is employed whereby transmissions having a variety of preselected quality of service guarantees are multiplexed onto the existing session. Data elements having the preselected qualities of service are transferred from service channels of another such layer. One, a system and method are provided for use between layer N+1 and layer N, wherein elements from two or more service channels from N+1 are transferred to one or more service channels in layer N such that a preselected quality of service is provided for the elements being transferred. Elements from a service channel having a higher priority, deadline, or period are transferred from the layer N+1 service channel to the layer N service channel before elements from a service channel having a lower priority, deadline, or period. In yet another embodiment, the number of elements are constrained whereby no more than a fixed number of such elements will receive service in a layer N service channel at a given point in time.

A multimedia computer system for scheduling and coordinating distributed multimedia resources is disclosed. The scheduling and coordinating are accomplished by the operation of an algorithm in the memory of a number of networked computers. The processor, under the control of the algorithm, creates, accesses, modifies and stores a plurality of data structures in a file on a non-volatile store such as a disk. The data structures store user inputs defining the parameters associated with multimedia sessions and the scheduling information necessary to support the requirements of the sessions with a specific Quality Of Service (QOS). This information is stored on each of the computers participating in the electronic meeting for subsequent use in scheduling and implementing the sessions via an Open System Interconnect (OSI) network for example.

A data processing system for regulating access to a communication network is disclosed herein. The data processing system employs a component that can be implemented in hardware logic or software. The component regulates access to the priority queue or transmit channel that is attached to the shared medium local area network section. All access to the priority queue or transmit channel must pass through this component, thus subjecting all communication transactions to rejection or tracking by the component. The component allocates a frame size based on the information to be transmitted and the priority to assure the transmission will be completed in line with the quality of service required. The component monitors the rate and size of messages to assure that an application's actual throughput does not exceed its negotiated throughput. The component, moreover, is capable of operating in correction mode where throughput and frame size violations are prevented and reported. Alternatively, the component operates in detection mode where violations are recorded and reported to an application.

A system and method is provided to compliment use of priority for reserved traffic in multimedia computerized data communication networks, to insure that the opportunity for transmitting large, unreserved data frames is constrained. If frames transmitted when the server releases a token tend to be small, then the server will capture a larger portion of the bandwidth. Thus, a short bandwidth reservation acknowledgement is transmitted onto the ring by the client for selected frames which it receives. This is not addressed to any station on the ring. Rather it is simply transmitted at a non-zero priority less than the server's priority. The criteria which is employed by the client for such acknowledgement is that the sender will send a bandwidth reservation acknowledgement only when the IEEE 802.5 AC field is set, but will do so for a fixed amount of time or for a fixed number of received frames. This criteria provides an optimization reducing overall ring utilization, since the bandwidth reservation acknowledgement is only sent when the ring is congested. A communication network is disclosed which transmits an unsolicited acknowledgement at non-zero priority for each non-zero priority frame received, such system thereby being independent of the communication protocol employed by the network station.
