The present invention relates to an optical fibre connector, and in particular to an optical port having a connector receptacle for receiving an optical fibre plug, and to an optical fibre connector assembly for transmitting and/or receiving an optical signal formed by an optical fibre connector and an optical fibre plug when these are joined together. The optical fibre connector assembly comprises an optical fibre connector and an optical fibre plug. The optical fibre plug includes a projecting ferrule and along an axis of this ferrule a first optical fibre. The optical connector including a hollow sleeve and within the sleeve a recessed ferrule and along an axis of this ferrule a second optical fibre. The sleeve has an open end for receiving and holding the projecting ferrule and has at the recessed ferrule a closed end, the arrangement being such that when the projecting ferrule is held within the sleeve both optical fibres are aligned to transmit and/or receive an optical signal along an optical axis defined by the fibres, and the closed end of the sleeve grips the recessed ferrule and the projecting ferrule more securely than the open end of the sleeve grips the projecting ferrule. The result is that if a force is applied at the open end of the ferrule to the projecting ferrule in a direction transverse to the optical axis then the first ferrule pivots within the sleeve about a point that lies closer to the closed end of the sleeve than to the open end of the sleeve.

Optical fibre connector

An optical device has a photodiode placed on a substrate. A guide is formed on the substrate so that it surrounds the photodiode with concentric positioning to an accuracy better than 5 &#x3bc;m. A ferrule of a ferrule assembly engages within the guide for automatic alignment with the photodiode without need for active alignment with monitoring of light signals.

Optical device

An optoelectronic device having a hermetically sealed optoelectronic component and to a method of forming the device, which may for example be an optical transmitter or receiver device for use in a fiber optic communications network. The optoelectronic device comprises a first sub-assembly and a second sub-assembly, the first sub-assembly comprising at least one optoelectronic component. The optoelectronic component is optically aligned with the at least one optical element along an optical axis to form a housing for the optoelectronic component, the sub-assemblies being joined by at least two joins across the interface including at least one non-hermetic join and separate from the non-hermetic join(s) a hermetic join that extends fully around the optical axis to seal hermitically the optoelectronic component within the housing.

Optoelectronic device

A subassembly apparatus includes a substantially shieldable interior chamber for housing at least one source of electromagnetic radiation, a connector plane external to the interior chamber for locating an end surface of a connector, and a launch window for locating an end surface of a waveguide, where the launch window is in or adjacent the connector plane. The apparatus also includes an internal propagation path extending from the interior chamber to the launch plane including a barrier of electrically conductive material disposed in the propagation path, the barrier being arranged to shield a planar region from electromagnetic radiation emitted from within the interior chamber, the planar region including substantially the connector plane substantially excluding the launch window.

Interface apparatus, connector apparatus and method of reducing electromagnetic interference

An optical fibre connector includes a connector having a receptacle or socket with a recessed optical fibre ferrule assembly for aligning an optical fibre within the connector. An optical socket has recessed therein a sleeve for receiving and bringing into optical alignment an optical fibre ferrule assembly at an internal end of the socket with a similar optical fibre ferrule assembly of an optical plug connected to the optical socket. The optical connector has a housing with at least two portions that are removably secured to one another. A method of cleaning such a recessed assembley includes removing at least one of said portions from the remainder of the housing. Contamination is then cleaned from the optical fibre ferrule assembly. Then, the the removed portion(s) are reassembled with the remainder of the housing.
