Devices and methods for providing interactivity during a swallowing exercise are disclosed. Sensory guidance is presented to guide a user through a set of swallows to be completed by the user during the swallowing exercise. Signals are received from a sensor device worn by the user, the signals representing surface electromyography data obtained when the user performs the swallowing exercise. Sensory feedback of the user's exertion level is presented, the feedback generated from the electromyography data and updated as further electromyography data is received from the sensor device, wherein the sensory feedback is presented in association with an exertion level calibrated to the user's ability.

Systems and methods for diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders with gamification

A system is provided for monitoring patients with dysphagia, or swallowing impairments, that monitors muscle movement during intensive swallowing exercises to provide adjuvant visual feedback from surface electromyography.

Topical sanitizers including alcohol-based gels, alcohol-based foams, alcohol-free foams, liquid soaps, alcohol-based wipes, and alcohol-based sprays include avenanthramides, which is an active component of oats that is beneficial to the skin. The concentration of avenanthramides can be substantially less when considering the use profile of the person using the sanitizers. Many healthcare workers sanitize their hands dozens of times a day. An effective dose of avenanthramides can be delivered to the skin even when the concentration in avenanthramides is relatively low due to the repeated application of the sanitizers during the day. In addition, a lower concentration of avenanthramides may be used to maintain healthy skin compared to a higher concentration that may be used to repair damaged skin. Minimum concentrations of avenanthramides in one or more topical sanitizers can be determined according to the use profile and the target amount of avenanthramides to deliver via the topical sanitizers.

Topical sanitizer includes avenanthramides, which is an active component of oats that is beneficial to the skin. The topical sanitizer is used preferably in conjunction with gloves that have an inner coating that includes avenanthramides. By using topical sanitizer that includes avenanthramides before and after wearing gloves, the skin of the person wearing the glove is more exposed to the beneficial avenanthramides all during the workday, not just when wearing gloves. The result is healthier, much softer and more comfortable skin on the hands.

Cereal &#x3b2;(1-3) &#x3b2;(1-4) glucan is used as a film or coating agent to produce clear, edible, biodegradable, delivery, lubricating, and protecting agents. Cereal &#x3b2;(1-3) &#x3b2;(1-4) glucans are distinctive polymers of glucose differentiated from other polymers by not only their source but also their physicochemical properties. The &#x3b2;(1-3) &#x3b2;(1-4) forms a matrix to sequester other materials, such as pharmaceutical, medical and therapeutic agents, flavors, fragrances. The technology has applications to essential oils and non-aqueous materials that are rendered deliverable by the &#x3b2;(1-3) &#x3b2;(1-4) glucan. The &#x3b2;(1-3) &#x3b2;(1-4) glucan films described may be consumed whereby they dissolve in the mouth in a controlled manner and may be used for the delivery of pharmaceutical, medical or confectionery products.

A process is described for the isolation, recovery and purification of non-polar extractives using one or more extracting solvents from the group of lower alcohols, ketones, and water. The non-polar extractives may include one or more of the classes alk(en)lyresorcinols, steroid, triterpenoid and cardiac glycosides and saponins, steryl ferulates and other phenolic acid conjugates, flavoroids, polar lipids, alcohol-soluble antimicrobials, prolamines and other alcohol-soluble proteolipids complexes. The process uses an aliphatic-substituted polysaccharide gel matrix in a process of hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and involves the steps of absorption, washing and recovery, wherein the extractives are absorbed and desorbed in the presence of and as a result of the concentration and selection of the organic ste of regenerating the gel matrix for further use.

Process for the isolation, recovery and purification of non-polar extractives

Simple and efficient methods for formulating cereal beta glucan compositions that retard the natural gel forming properties of hydrocolloids and remain free flowing liquids is disclosed. The method employs a biological buffer system consisting of a zwitterionic salt that will vary pH with temperature. The resulting beta glucan preparation can be used directly or stored for future use.
