Methods and devices addressing power tracking of transmission systems using antenna arrays are disclosed. The disclosed teachings may be implemented on a channel element to channel element basis, are adaptive and can be implemented on short time durations such as time slots. Power efficiency can be improved when applying the described methods to the design of systems with antenna arrays.

Antenna array element by element power tracking

A phase shifter for altering the phase of a radio frequency signal is disclosed herein. A Lange coupler is used having reflective ports that are coupled to artificial transmission lines. The artificial transmission lines provide a reflection transmission path, the length of which can be determined by digital control lines. Transistors placed along the length of the central trace provide independent paths to ground that serve to shorten the electrical length of the ATL. Accordingly, by selectively turning the transistors on/off, the electrical length of the ATL can be selected and thus the amount of phase delay introduced by the phase shifter.

Devices and methods for reconfiguration of electronic circuits in multi-antenna communication systems are described. Using indexed programmable lookup tables, phase and gain information related to the antenna array implemented in such system is accessed. Same method may be used to reconfigure state of transceivers and other electronic circuits within such systems. The described methods and devices can be implemented using standardized serial interfaces.

Circuits and methods for correction of errors in multi-stage stepwise signal modification circuits. Embodiments of the invention also provide flexibility to correct accuracy errors over a range of conditions, such as differences in signal frequency and/or temperature. A first embodiment includes sorting actual values of a multi-stage stepwise signal modification circuit to generate a monotonic listing of actual values; mapping input codes to a new order of codes corresponding to the sorted actual values; and providing mapping functionality to convert each input code into a mapped output code. A second embodiment includes searching, for each ideal value corresponding to an input code, all actual values of a multi-stage stepwise signal modification circuit for the actual value closest to the ideal value; mapping input codes to a new order of codes corresponding to the closest actual values; and providing mapping functionality to convert each input code into a mapped output code.

Device and method for automatic network detection and formation

A calibration architecture that enables accurate calibration of radio frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) chips used in transceiver RF systems in a relatively simple testing environment. Embodiments of the invention include one or more on-chip switchable internal calibration paths that enable direct coupling of a portion of the on-chip circuit to an RF test system while isolating other circuitry on the chip. Some embodiments allow interconnection of switchable internal calibration paths between separate IC chips. Still other embodiments utilize internal switches and antenna mutual coupling to provide over-the-air calibration, alone or in combination with direct signal coupling via internal calibration paths. Periodic self-calibration of an RF IC can be performed after initial factory calibration, so that adjustments in desired performance parameters can be made while such an IC is embedded within a final system, and/or to take into account component degradation due to age or other factors.

Integrated circuit calibration architecture

Systems and methods for performing channel equalization in a communication system are presented. More particularly, embodiments of the disclosed method and apparatus are directed toward systems and methods for performing channel equalization in an OFDM system. One example of a method of negating the effects of IQ imbalance can include the operations of transmitting a channel estimation string across a channel. The channel estimation string comprises a plurality of known channel estimation symbols. The method further includes logically inverting predetermined symbols within the known channel estimation string; transmitting a second channel estimation string across the channel, the second channel estimation string including the logically inverted predetermined symbols; and estimating the IQ image noise based on received first and second channel estimation symbols.

IQ imbalance equalization system and method

An integrated device having a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) cascaded with a limiter can be tested such that the frequency response of the TIA is accurately measured. The frequency response of the TIA is derived from the measured output jitter response of the integrated TIA/limiter device. In a practical testing system, a sinusoidal test signal having a constant amplitude is combined with a broadband noise signal having a constant power level to obtain a noisy test signal. The TIA/limiter is driven by the noisy test signal while the frequency of the test signal is varied. The output jitter of the TIA/limiter is measured for a number of frequency settings to obtain the output jitter response.
