The present disclosure relates to devices, methods, and computer-readable medium for saving and restoring physical hardware states and virtual machine (VM) states for an application actively being executed on a virtual machine by a user on a computer device. The devices, methods, and computer-readable medium may allow a user to suspend a current state of an application session and save the VM and memory state to persistent storage, and later resume the execution of the saved application session by reading the state back into memory and restoring the VM state.

Saving and restoring virtual machine states and hardware states for application content

Obligatorily-acquired digital content items are stored under service control in one or more local storage machines of a computer based on service commands provided by a centralized management service; and voluntarily-acquired digital content items are stored under user control in the one or more local storage machines of the computer based on user commands. The obligatorily-acquired digital content items are protected from user-commanded deletion. The obligatorily-acquired digital content items are deleted from the one or more local storage machines based on service commands provided by the centralized management service. However, the voluntarily-acquired digital content items are deleted from the one or more local storage machines based on user commands.

Content distribution storage management

A storage stack exposes an API for use by user mode applications. An application calls a function exposed by the API to enqueue requests to read a file on a file submission queue ('FSQ'). Read requests in the FSQ are dequeued in batches, and file offsets in the batches of dequeued read requests are translated to disk offsets. The translated batches of read requests are stored in a storage submission queue ('SSQ'). A storage subsystem retrieves batches of the translated read requests from the SSQ and performs the specified read operations. Completion notifications for the read requests are stored in a storage completion queue (&#x201c;SCQ&#x201d;). Batches of completion notifications are dequeued from the SCQ and translated to file completions. Batches of file completions are stored in a file completion queue (&#x201c;FCQ&#x201d;). The user mode application that submitted the read requests can dequeue batches of completion notifications from the FCQ.

The plurality of sources includes one or more peer computers of a peer-to-peer network. For each piece of the plurality of pieces of the digital content item, that piece is acquired from a source.

Content-acquisition source selection and management

A plurality of sources storing portions of a digital content item that includes a plurality of pieces is identified. The plurality of sources includes one or more local storage machines of a computer and one or more peer computers of a peer-to-peer network. For each piece of the plurality of pieces of the digital content item, that piece is downloaded from a source. The source is selected from the plurality of sources according to one or more download metrics. The plurality of pieces is organized for installation on the computer as the digital content item.

Embodiments related to network video messaging are disclosed. One disclosed embodiment provides a method that comprises receiving a video message from a client application of a source client; associating a navigation link with the video message; transmitting a notification message to the recipient client including the navigation link; receiving a retrieval request from the recipient client to access the video content via the navigation link; and transmitting the video content to the recipient client responsive to receiving the retrieval request by providing a persistent download of the video content from the storage server if the download condition indicates that a persistent download of the video content is permissible; and providing a transient download of the video content to the recipient client while prohibiting a persistent download of the video content if the download condition indicates that a persistent download of the video content is not permissible.

Network video messaging

In various embodiments, methods and systems for prefetching recommended-media content based on a prefetch setting of a media platform are provided. A recommended-media record of recommended-media content is received. The recommended-media record is generated based on recommendation metrics of a recommendation profile. The recommended-media record is associated with a media platform. The media platform determines based on a prefetch setting for the media platform how to automatically download the recommended-media content associated with the recommended-media record to the media platform, where a default prefetch setting results in automatically downloading the recommended-media content to the media platform and a customized prefetch setting results in automatically downloading the recommended-media content based on the customized prefetch setting. Upon determining how to download the recommended-media content, the recommended-media content is downloaded based on the prefetch setting of the media platform.

Intelligent prefetching of recommended-media content

A method is provided for prompting a user to perform PIM-related acts based on dynamic location data. The user's current location is received and a PIM item is selected from the user's PIM system. The user's current location is compared to the location of the selected PIM item. Based on the comparison, a suggested user fulfillment action for the PIM item is suggested to the user.

Personal information management with location functionality

Systems and methods are provided for delivering contextual advertising to a vehicle. An example system may include a profiler module executed by an onboard computing device of the vehicle, and configured to aggregate vehicle event data from a plurality of vehicle-based event sources, and to develop user profile data based on the vehicle event data. A communication agent may also be executed by the onboard computing device, and configured to transmit the user profile data to an advertising service executed on an advertising server via a communication network. The communication agent may also be configured to retrieve an advertisement from the advertising service. The advertisement may be selected based on content of the user profile data. The system may also include an interface module executed by the onboard computing device, and configured to present the advertisement via a display, and/or speaker associated with the onboard computing device.

Delivering contextual advertising to a vehicle

Systems and methods are provided for linking a web identity and a portable device to provide web access to a user from a vehicle. An example system includes a presence agent that may be configured to validate the presence of the portable device in the vehicle by recognizing a device identifier saved on the portable device. After the presence of the portable device is validated, a security manager may receive a user identifier, and verify if the user identifier corresponds with a known user value. Then, the security manager may send a user identity secure proxy to a credential manager. The credential manager may be configured to receive the user identity secure proxy, and in response, pass one or more credentials to a computing device onboard the vehicle. The credentials may indicate that the user is authorized to access one or more web services from the computing device.

A computer-implemented method is disclosed for reducing coding errors prior to runtime in the context of a managed code execution environment. The method includes providing a developer with access to a plurality of managed code resources. The method also includes verifying that a resource identifier input by the developer corresponds to one of the plurality of managed code resources.

Address support for resources in common-language runtime languages

Automatic download of personalized media content to a portable media device based on user preferences is disclosed. A media service can evaluate content on a user's media device as well as user action related thereto to infer the user's preferences, and can automatically aggregate and download content that is relevant to the user's tastes. The user can subscribe to, for example, playlists generated by the media service, another user's playlist(s), a simulated radio station, etc., and can receive content updates thereto at predefined intervals and/or upon release of the updates. In this manner, the user can periodically receive media content that is personalized to the user without requiring the user to explicitly request the content or synchronize to a PC.
