A biomedical implant () is formed from magnesium (Mg) single crystal (). The biomedical implant () may be biodegradable. The biomedical implant () may be post treated to control the mechanical properties and/or corrosion rate thereof said Mg single crystal () without changing the chemical composition thereof. A method of making a Mg single crystal () for biomedical applications includes filling a single crucible () with more than one chamber with polycrystalline Mg, melting at least a portion of said polycrystalline Mg, and forming more than one Mg single crystal () using directional solidification.

A method of forming a carbon nanotube array substrate is disclosed. One embodiment comprises depositing a composite catalyst layer on the substrate, oxidizing the composite catalyst layer, reducing the oxidized composite catalyst layer, and growing the array on the composite catalyst layer. The composite catalyst layer may comprise a group VIII element and a non-catalytic element deposited onto the substrate from an alloy. In another embodiment, the composite catalyst layer comprises alternating layers of iron and a lanthanide, preferably gadolinium or lanthanum. The composite catalyst layer may be reused to grow multiple carbon nanotube arrays without additional processing of the substrate. The method may comprise bulk synthesis by forming carbon nanotubes on a plurality of particulate substrates having a composite catalyst layer comprising the group VIII element and the non-catalytic element. In another embodiment, the composite catalyst layer is deposited on both sides of the substrate.

A method of forming an array of aligned, uniform-length carbon nanotubes on a planar surface of a substrate employing a composite catalyst layer of iron and cobalt. The carbon nanotubes have visible length and are useful for producing spun threads of carbon nanotubes having improved spinability and mechanical and electrical properties.

A sensor sleeve for use in detecting a failure in an article (e.g., a hydraulic hose), the sensor sleeve includes an insulator layer that separates two electrode layers. As such, the electrode layers deform to contact each other, which changes the impedance as measured across the electrode layers. The sensor sleeve is designed to change electrical impedance (resistance) due to fluid pressure initiating a hole through the sensor itself. The sensor sleeve will detect the fluid leak when the hole penetrates the sensor and brings the two elastic electrodes in contact with each other and/or the fluid, which when the fluid is conductive fluid, creates a signal path between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer, which also changes the impedance as measured across the electrode layers.

A sensor array for non-destructively monitoring a structure to detect a critical structural event. The sensor array includes a plurality of discrete sensor nodes, each of the discrete sensor nodes producing an electrical signal in response to a structural event. A signal adder is electrically connected to the plurality of discrete sensor nodes for receiving and combining the electrical signal from each of the discrete sensor nodes to form a single sensor array output signal. A signal processing module then receives and processes the single sensor output signal. In the preferred embodiment, the signal processing module uses the time interval between the electrical signals from each of the discrete sensor nodes formed into a single sensor array output signal to calculate the location of the critical structural event. Also, in the preferred embodiment, a data collection system is located downstream of the sensor processing module.

System for damage location using a single channel continuous acoustic emission sensor

A sensor array for nondestructively monitoring a structure to detect a critical event. The sensor array includes a plurality of discrete sensor nodes, each of the discrete sensor nodes producing an electrical signal in response to a structural event. In the preferred embodiment, the sensor nodes include a plurality of piezoceramic fibers arranged in a planar array in which the fibers are aligned substantially parallel to each other, each of the fibers having a plurality of polarized regions that are substantially oriented according to their polarity in either a series, parallel, or combined arrangement of series and parallel orientations, and an electrical interface connecting the plurality of polarized regions of each fiber in series with one another. A signal adder receives and combines the electrical signals from each of the discrete sensor nodes to form a single sensor array output signal. In the preferred embodiment, the electrical interface further includes at least one electrical bus substantially aligned with the fibers and a signal processing module for receiving and processing the single sensor output signal. The signal processing module is linked through the digital data bus to a central processing unit. The plurality of discrete sensor nodes may further be divided into discrete subgroups, each located at a different structural location to provide a degree of sensing and determining the location of the structural event. In the preferred embodiment, the discrete sensor nodes are electrically connected in series, thereby forming a continuous series connection between each of the discrete sensor nodes to improve the likelihood that a critical structural event will be detected.
