In one aspect, methods of making freestanding metal matrix composite articles and alloy articles are described. A method of making a freestanding composite article described herein comprises disposing over a surface of the temporary substrate a layered assembly comprising a layer of infiltration metal or alloy and a hard particle layer formed of a flexible sheet comprising organic binder and the hard particles. The layered assembly is heated to infiltrate the hard particle layer with metal or alloy providing a metal matrix composite, and the metal matrix composite is separated from the temporary substrate. Further, a method of making a freestanding alloy article described herein comprises disposing over the surface of a temporary substrate a flexible sheet comprising organic binder and powder alloy and heating the sheet to provide a sintered alloy article. The sintered alloy article is then separated from the temporary substrate.

Methods of making metal matrix composite and alloy articles

In one aspect, methods of making cladded articles are described herein. A method of making a cladded article, in some embodiments, comprises disposing over a surface of a metallic substrate a sheet comprising organic binder and powder metal or powder alloy having a solidus temperature at least 100&#xb0; C. less than the metallic substrate and heating the powder metal or powder alloy to provide a sintered metal or sintered alloy cladding metallurgically bonded to the metallic substrate.

Cladded articles and methods of making the same

In one aspect, coated cutting tools are described herein which, in some embodiments, can demonstrate improved wear resistance in one or more cutting applications. In some embodiments, a coated cutting tool described herein comprises a substrate and a coating adhered to the substrate, the coating comprising an inner layer deposited by physical vapor deposition and an outer deposited by physical vapor deposition over the inner layer.

Coating for improved wear resistance

A coated cutting insert for use in a chip-forming material removal operation wherein the coated cutting insert includes a substrate that has a flank surface and a rake surface and the flank surface intersects the rake surface to form a cutting edge at the intersection. There is a wear-resistant coating scheme that adheres to at least a portion of the substrate. The wear-resistant coating scheme includes one or more coating layers of one or more of alumina, hafnia and zirconia. There is a wear indicating coating that adheres to at least a portion of the wear-resistant coating scheme. The wear indicating coating includes M(OCN) wherein M is selected from the group comprising one or more of the following titanium, hafnium, zirconium, chromium, titanium-aluminum alloy, hafnium-aluminum alloy, zirconium-aluminum alloy, chromium-aluminum alloy, and their alloys, and x&#x3e;0, y&#x2267;0, z&#x2267;0 and y+z&#x3e;0. A method of making a cutting insert with wear indicating coating including the steps of: providing a substrate with an outer alumina coating layer; applying an as-deposited non-wear indicating coating layer to the alumina coating layer; and treating the non-wear indicating coating layer to convert it to a wear indicating coating layer.
