A portable notebook computer having a thickness of only one inch is obtained by provision of a computer housing containing a keyboard assembly and a motherboard positioned directly below the keyboard assembly, the keyboard assembly and the motherboard thereby defining a region in the enclosure. The other components comprising the computer; i.e. a hard disk drive, a PCMCIA option slot, a trackball assembly, and a DC to DC convertor, are positioned in an adjacent and generally co-planar relationship with this region. A battery housing is mounted externally on the computer housing for supplying electrical power to the computer.

A computer having a case has a connection point for a communications line, where the connection point is accessible from outside the case. A socket receives a standard communications hardware card, the hardware card having a first receptacle to electrically connect to circuits of the computer, and the hardware card having a second receptacle to electrically connect to an exterior electrical circuit, the exterior electrical circuit usually being exterior to the case. A mounting means attaches the socket to the computer, the mounting means positioning the socket to facilitate a connection to the second receptacle of the hardware card, the connection located wholly internal to the case. A multi wire connector electrically connects to the second receptacle of the hardware card, and the multi wire connector is located wholly internal to the case. At least one signal wire has a first end electrically connected to the multi wire connector, and the at least one signal wire has a second end electrically connected to the connection point, the at least one signal wire is located wholly internal to the case, and the at least one signal wire transfers communication signals between the connection point and the hardware card in order to connect the computer to the communications line. The multi wire connector which electrically connects to the second receptacle of the hardware card and is located wholly internally to the case may be located adjacent to an opening in the case, and the opening facilitates inserting the card into the socket. A cover is provided for the opening, the cover closes the case during normal operation of the computer, the cover is removed from the opening for the purpose of removing or inserting the card in the socket.

A very thin portable computer includes a computer housing for holding electronic components and a battery housing movably mounted external to the computer housing, the battery housing adapted for holding batteries for supplying power to the electronic components. Computer systems using a processor that is capable of operating in a system management mode (SMM) employ a dedicated system management RAM (SMRAM). The processor uses the SMRAM when the processor is performing a task associated with the SMM. The processor is capable of generating a range of system addresses. The range includes a particular subrange of system addresses that are used for accessing the SMRAM. A memory controller decodes the system addresses generated by the processor and enables access to the SMRAM, regardless of whether the processor is operating in the SMM, when the controller decodes a system address of the particular subrange. The range of system addresses also includes a second subrange. The memory controller also enables access to the SMRAM when the processor is operating in the SMM and the controller decodes a system address of the second subrange. The memory controller indicates to the processor whether data associated with the enabled SMRAM can be stored in a cache memory.

A heat dissipating arrangement in a portable computer uses a copper slug disposed between a heat-generating central processing unit (CPU) chip and the underside of a metallic keyboard baseplate. The slug also extends through a copper-plated hole in a printed circuit (PC) board, and is either soldered to the copper plating or press-fit into the hole to enhance heat transfer between the slug and the PC board. Small through-holes extend through the PC board and the copper plating next to the opening. These through-holes connect the copper plating to several layers of etch within the PC board, so that these layers act like fins on a heat sink to increase heat transfer away from the CPU.
