A DMT system for a half-duplex two-way link carries Internet protocol encoded video stream on a coaxial cable that also carries a baseband rendition of the same video stream. A plurality of downlink symbols modulated on a subband of subcarriers in a downlink signal are decoded. The symbols may carry data encoded on a subband using a constellation of QAM symbols assigned to the subband. Other subbands may be associated with different QAM constellations. Lower-order constellations of QAM symbols may be assigned to subbands that include higher-frequency subcarriers and higher-order constellations of QAM symbols may be assigned to subbands that include lower-frequency subcarriers. A block error correction decoder may be synchronized based on an identification of the first constellation of QAM symbols and information identifying boundaries between the plurality of downlink symbols.

Discrete multi-tone systems for half-duplex IP links

A novel framing method for a variable net bit rate digital communications system that utilizes a set of different QAM constellations and punctured trellis code combinations, each combination designated as a mode. This frame structure has a variable integral number of QAM symbols per frame depending on the selected mode, but the number of bytes and Reed-Solomon packets per frame is constant. This is achieved even though the number of data bits per QAM symbol for some modes is fractional. Also the number of trellis coder puncture pattern cycles per frame is an integer for all modes. This arrangement simplifies the synchronization of receiver processing blocks such as the Viterbi decoder, de-randomizer, byte de-interleaver, and Reed-Solomon decoder.

Normally ordered robust VSB data are reordered in accordance with a first interleave to produce reordered robust VSB data. The reordered robust VSB data and ATSC data are reordered in accordance with a second interleave to produce normally ordered robust VSB data and reordered ATSC data. The normally ordered robust VSB data and reordered ATSC data are time multiplexed for transmission to a receiver. The receiver discards the reordered ATSC data or the normally ordered robust VSB data depending upon receiver type or user selection. A robust VSB receiver is able to process the normally ordered robust VSB data upstream of an outer decoder without an interleave thereby avoiding the delay associated with an interleave.

Robust digital communication system

Systems and methods for controlling transmission of signals are described. A camera-side modem is configured to receive two signals from a video camera and to extract a received passband signal from a transmission line. A detector in the camera-side modem generates an enable signal when the received passband signal is identified. The enable signal is used to control transmission of at least one of the baseband video signal and the passband video signal. The passband signal may be identified by an estimate of mean square error in a quadrature amplitude demodulator, a measurement of reliability provided by a constellation detector, a measurement of reliability based on a sequence of frame synchronizations and/or an estimate of mean square error in an equalizer. The detector may monitor a gain factor in an automatic gain control module of the camera-side modem and/or a magnitude of the received passband signal.

Systems and methods for controlling transmission of signals are described. A detector in the camera-side modem generates an alarm signal when disruption or loss of the received passband signal is identified. An enable signal is used to control transmission of at least one of the baseband video signal and the passband video signal. The passband signal may be identified by an estimate of mean square error in a quadrature amplitude demodulator, a measurement of reliability provided by a constellation detector, a measurement of reliability based on a sequence of frame synchronizations and/or an estimate of mean square error in an equalizer. The detector may monitor a gain factor in an automatic gain control module of the camera-side modern and/or a magnitude of the received passband signal.

Systems and methods for detecting tampering with video transmission systems

Systems and methods are described that may be used to detect and correct carrier phase offset in a signal. A phase offset corrector receives an equalized signal representative of a quadrature amplitude modulated signal and derives a phase-corrected signal from the equalized signal. The equalized signal is sliced to obtain real and imaginary sequences and a frame synchronizer performs a correlation of the real and imaginary sequences with corresponding parts of a stored frame-sync pseudo-random sequence. Phase correction is based on the maximum real and imaginary values of the correlation. The signal is typically quadrature amplitude modulated signal is modulated using punctured trellis codes. Quadrature phase shift keying modulation, 16-QAM, 64-QAM and other QAM schemes may be used.

Carrier phase offset correction for a QAM system

A method and system for determining a step size of an adaptive equalizer for a digital data receiver. The data received by the receiver includes coded symbols and uncoded symbols. The method includes determining a first error estimate based on decoded symbols corresponding to the coded symbols, determining a second error estimate based on the uncoded symbols, adaptively selecting the first error estimate or the second error estimate based on a convergence criterion, and determining a step size based on the selected error estimate.

Systems and methods for determining an unknown QPSK or QAM constellation from a set of possible received constellations are described. One method utilizes a histogram of the power of the signal after inter-symbol-interference has been minimized with a modified constant modulus algorithm equalizer. The constellation may be determined before carrier frequency and phase has been fully recovered. An unknown QPSK or QAM constellation may be identified before or after equalization using disclosed methods for analyzing an output power histogram.

Constellation detection in a multi-mode QAM communications system

A decision feedback equalizer is operated by making first symbol decisions from an output of the decision feedback equalizer such that the first symbol decisions are characterized by a relatively long processing delay, by making second symbol decisions from the output of the decision feedback equalizer such that the second symbol decisions are characterized by a relatively short processing delay, and by determining tap weights for the decision feedback equalizer based on the first and second symbol decisions. The first symbol decisions may be derived from the output of a long traceback trellis decoder. The second symbol decisions may be derived either from the output of a short traceback trellis decoder or from shorter delay outputs of the long traceback trellis decoder.
