Embodiments relate to subcutaneous insertion systems comprising a surface device to be applied to a patient's skin and an insertion system for applying the surface device to the patient, wherein the applying can include subcutaneous insertion of a cannula or other element, and related devices and methods. The surface device comprises a surface for application to the skin of a patient and a subcutaneous element, such as a cannula, wire, filament or other device, extending from the skin's surface at an angle greater than 0 degrees and less than 90 degrees.

An infusion device including a site and a set for delivery of a substance to a patient. The site can include a cannula that is introduced into a subcutaneous layer of skin of the patient. The set can be coupled to the site by placing the set over the site and moving the set from an unlocked to a locked position. The set can be oriented at multiple rotational orientations with respect to the site, and can be coupled and uncoupled with the site multiple times. Also included is a device for inserting a subcutaneous infusion device into a subcutaneous layer of skin of a patient. Some devices automatically retract a needle used to introduce the cannula. Upon full introduction of the needle and associated cannula of the subcutaneous infusion device into a subcutaneous layer of skin of a patient, the device can move the needle into a retracted state.

Subcutaneous infusion device and device for insertion of a cannula of an infusion device and method

A site for a subcutaneous infusion device includes a base positionable relative to skin of a patient, and a cannula extending from the base and configured to be introduced into a subcutaneous layer of skin of the patient at a generally ninety-degree angle with respect to the skin using a needle. The cannula includes first and second ends and defines a bore extending from the first end to the second end, the first end being coupled to the base. The cannula includes a tapered wall portion formed between the first and second ends and extending from adjacent to the base towards the second end of the cannula, the tapered wall portion being tapered from a greater wall thickness to a lesser wall thickness as the tapered wall portion extends from the base towards the second end.

A medication pump includes a housing including an external wall and a plurality of internal adjoining housings, including a first housing enclosing a cartridge. The pump includes a primary vent for venting the medication pump to atmosphere, the primary vent including a primary liquid barrier allowing passage of gas therethrough while preventing passage of liquid therethrough. The pump includes a secondary vent on the first housing, the secondary vent including a secondary liquid barrier allowing passage of gas therethrough to an interior of the housing while preventing passage of liquid therethrough.

For example, some devices automatically retract a needle used to introduce the cannula of a subcutaneous infusion device into the subcutaneous layer of skin of a patient. The device can include a housing with an internal cavity, as well as a needle coupled to the housing. The needle can be coupled to a cannula of a subcutaneous infusion device. A member can move the needle. Upon full introduction of the needle and associated cannula of the subcutaneous infusion device into a subcutaneous layer of skin of a patient, the member is automatically actuated to move the needle into the internal cavity of the housing into the retracted state while leaving the cannula of the subcutaneous infusion device in the subcutaneous layer of skin of the patient.

Subcutaneous infusion device and method

A device for inserting a subcutaneous infusion device into skin of a patient. The device can include a housing, a needle hub including a needle, a sleeve, and a spring engaging the needle hub. The device can also include a cap coupled to the housing, and a retention member configured to maintain the device in a ship state prior to decoupling of the cap from the housing. In one example, the retention member can include a boss coupled to the cap and configured to engage the infusion device to maintain the infusion device in the ship state prior to decoupling of the cap from the housing. In another example, the retention member can include a tab formed by the sleeve, the tab engaging a bead on an internal surface of the cap when the sleeve moves relative to the housing while the device is in the ship state.

The present invention concerns a medication pump for use with a medication cartridge that is loaded using a drive rod of the medication pump. In one embodiment, the drive rod includes an interface structure defining a first channel where the first channel has an axial portion disposed parallel to an axis of the drive rod and a locking portion disposed in a circumferential direction around an outer surface of the drive rod. In another embodiment of the invention, the drive rod includes a visual indicator at an interface end of the drive rod, so that when the interface structure of the drive rod is coupled to a plunger of a medication cartridge, the visual indicator will not be seen, to provide a way to check for secure coupling of the drive rod to the plunger. In its embodiment, the outer housing of the medication pump includes a window into a cartridge housing to allow a view of the visual indicator if it is not attached to the plunger. In another embodiment the medication pump includes a pump cap that has guides located on an interior surface. These guides engage axial guides on a medication cartridge, so that when the pump cap is rotated, it causes rotation of the medication cartridge so that the medication cartridge is rotated into engagement with the interface structure of the drive rod.

The present invention concerns a medication pump, a cartridge for use in a medication pump, a pump cap for use with a medication pump, components of the cartridge and methods of use of these devices. A cartridge includes a plunger having a tab that projects from an interior wall of the plunger. The tab can be used to lock the plunger into engagement with a drive rod of the pump. The drive rod defines a channel for receiving the tab of the plunger, where the channel includes an axial portion disposed parallel to an axis of the drive rod and a locking portion disposed in a circumferential direction around an outer surface of the drive rod. A similar channel structure can be provided on a removable fill rod used while filling the cartridge. The cartridge axially inserted into a cartridge chamber and then is rotated into engagement with the drive rod. The cartridge may also include axial guides at one end that interface with a guides on pump cap. When the pump cap is rotated into engagement with the pump, the interacting guides cause the cartridge to be rotated into engagement with the drive rod.

Reusable cassettes for a drug pump are disclosed to house a fluid reservoir and tubing extending from the reservoir across a tubing support surface of the pressure plate of the cassette. A hinged housing provides reversible access to the fluid reservoir. Reuse of a portion of the pressure plate is also disclosed.
