A technique for avoiding spurious TCP timeouts through delay injection which requires no modification of, or access to, the TCP protocol itself. More particularly, injection of additional random delay or jitter at some point in a packet's roundtrip path across a wireless communications network is employed so as to increase the variance in round trip times, without significantly increasing the average value thereof. Spurious TCP timeouts are avoided through the artificial delay injection which occurs at a network element along the communications path and without modification of, or requiring access to, the TCP protocol. Further, the injection of artificial delay is applied on a transaction-by-transaction basis. That is, the decision to inject, or not inject, the artificial delay as well as the value of the injected delay are applied to each TCP connection or TCP flow.

Methods and devices for assigning mobile devices to base stations in the presence of interference

A General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Accessed Extended Mobile Internet Protocol (EMIP) [G-EMIP] network is provided for wireless mobile device access to external packet data networks. Domains are defined to incorporate a subnet of standard GPRS and EMIP network entities accessed through a Domain Router. Packet access at the radio interface is provided using the base station portion of a GPRS network. Wireless link specific processing is relegated to this potion of the G-EMIP network. EMIP is utilized as a backbone network to provide mobility and service management and interconnection to external networks. A GPRS-IP Interworking entity (GII) interworks IP and GPRS protocols between GPRS and IP addressable network entities (i.e., translates messages of each protocol to corresponding messages of the other protocol). Mobility-related functionality is handled at the IP (network) layer. Mobile IP is used to support the macro-mobility and Handoff-Aware Wireless Access Internet Infrastructure (HAWAII) is used to support micro-mobility and paging. The Domain Router provides packet service management and interacts with a Home Location Register/Authentication Center, which provides GRPS registration, authentication and encryption.

Wireless access of packet based networks

An adaptive equalizer (also called a laser interface) for generating an electrical modulating signal for use by a laser to modulate an optical data signal. The laser has a non-linear modulation response pattern such that the optical data signal comprises a primary data signal and a plurality of harmonic distortion products. The adaptive equalizer operates by generating a correction electrical signal having a frequency equal to a frequency of one of the harmonic distortion products (this harmonic distortion product is nulled by operation of the adaptive equalizer). The adaptive equalizer detects the phase and amplitude of the harmonic distortion product. Then, the adaptive equalizer phase shifts the correction electrical signal in accordance with the detected phase such that the correction electrical signal and the harmonic distortion product are conjugately matched. The adaptive equalizer amplifies the phase shifted correction electrical signal in accordance with the detected amplitude such that the phase shifted correction electrical signal and the harmonic distortion product are equal in amplitude. Then, the amplified and phase shifted correction electrical signal is combined with an electrical data signal to form the electrical modulating signal.
