A method, system and computer program product are provided for implementing configuration preserving relocation of a Single Root Input/Output Virtualization (SRIOV) adapter in a computer system. At system power on an SRIOV adapter having been relocated to a different slot while the system was powered off is automatically detected, and the configuration data associated with the adapter automatically updated so that it remains associated with the adapter in the adapter's new location.

Implementing configuration preserving relocation of SRIOV adapter

A method of reallocating memory to a hypervisor in a virtualized computing system, includes: assigning priorities to a plurality of logical partitions configured within the virtualized computing system; determining a memory requirement for the hypervisor, the hypervisor configured to manage the plurality of logical partitions; determining minimum levels of memory required for each of the plurality of logical partitions; determining the amount of available memory in the virtualized computing system; and in the event that the amount of available memory is less than the determined memory requirement of the hypervisor, removing portions of memory from one or more of the plurality of logical partitions based on the assigned priorities until the determined memory requirement for the hypervisor is obtained.

Method for distributing hypervisor memory requirements across logical partitions

A processor allocation mechanism for a logically partitionable computer system allows an administrator to specify processing capability allocable to each partition as an equivalent number of processors, where the processing capability may be specified as a non-integer value. This processing capability value is unaffected by changes to the processing capability values of other partitions. The administrator may designate multiple sets of processors, assigning each physical processor of the system to a respective processor set. Each logical partition is constrained to execute in an assigned processor set, which may be shared by more than one partition. Preferably, the administrator may designate a logical partition as either capped, meaning that a partition can not use excess idle capacity of the processors, or uncapped, meaning that it can.

Method and apparatus for allocating processor resources in a logically partitioned computer system

When a computer system is upgraded, such as by adding a more advanced processor chip and/or a new operating system, a different page size may be employed. The page size is altered for data previously stored in a storage medium such as a hard disk in the computer system, without removing all of the data from the medium and rewriting it. Data is stored in the medium in blocks or sectors which have headers defining the block. Also, tables define memory objects and segments, and locate virtual memory addresses in physical memory. The headers and/or tables can be changed without rewriting all of the data in the sectors or pages in physical memory, so the page size is changed to accommodate the new system components, without excessive burden on system hardware or undue expenditure of time. In an example, in changing from a CISC processor with a 512-byte page size to a RISC system with a 4K-byte page size, the segments are changed to always be of a size of an integral multiple of 4K, and 'extents' or subdivisions within a segment are changed to be multiples of 4K. Any excess space generated by these changes is zeroed. After alteration, the media (such as disks) can be accessed by either the CISC system or the new upgraded RISC system.
