one embodiment of a memory stores information, including address bits, on DNA strands and provides access using a pipeline of tubes, where each tube selectively transfers half of the strands to the next tube based on probing of associated address bits. Transfers are controlled by logic relating to the state of the tubes: The pipeline may be initialized to start at a high-order target address, providing random access without enzymes, synthesizing probe molecules or PCR at access time. Thereafter, a processing unit gets fast access to sequentially addressed strands each cycle, for applications like executing machine language instructions or reading blocks of data from a file. Another embodiment with a compare unit allows low-order random access. Provided that addresses are encoded using single-stranded regions of DNA where probe molecules may hybridize, other information may use any DNA encoding. Electronic/electrochemical (electrowetting, nanopore, etc.) embodiments as well as biochemical embodiments are possible.

Method and apparatus for a pipelined DNA memory hierarchy

A method using hardware button(s) dispatches gestures for motion-disabled users. It displays a translucent layer, on top of underlying applications, which intercepts user touch events (preventing inadvertent gestures) and modifies (x',y&#x2032;) based on dampened differences of most recent intercepted event coordinates (swabs). The method operates in three modes identified by translucent colors and/or digits (how many button pushes before invocation): mode 1 dispatches short taps at (x&#x2032;,y&#x2032;); mode 2 displays extending arrow while the user swabs (x&#x2032;,y&#x2032;) until the second push, which dispatches scrolling in arrow direction; mode 3 creates an arrow and pivot. Pivot size and color indicate magnification/demagnification. The third push dispatches zooming when pivot and arrow are collinear; otherwise it dispatches rotation. A special case of mode 2 dispatches a long tap. In one embodiment, dispatched gestures are allowed through a momentary hole centered at (x&#x2032;,y&#x2032;) surrounded by four other rectangles in the translucent layer.

Five-rectangle method for dispatching touch events from motion-disabled users

An accessory helps motion-disabled users operate a touchscreen device via an extra-software-layer running on the CPU of the device. The accessory may take the shape of a glove, stylus or thimble. The accessory has a circuit that selectively engages and disengages the electrical connection between the user and the touchscreen based on mode and/or user/transducer interaction to send extra information from the user to the extra-software layer. A controller in the accessory generates unique timing patterns of connection and disconnection which the extra-software layer reconstructs by computing statistics from motion-event timestamps. The extra-software layer uses one or more (x,y) coordinates to compute an (x',y&#x2032;) coordinate, which is shown on the pixel display. With (x&#x2032;,y&#x2032;) and the reconstructed-timing pattern in the extra-software layer, the user may separately 1) choose (x&#x2032;, y&#x2032;) non-destructively (leave unaltered the internal state of an underlying application) and 2) invoke an action associated with that (x&#x2032;,y&#x2032;).

Touchscreen accessory and software for motion-disabled users

A system for embedding real-time Model Predictive Control (MPC) in a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) devices is provided. In the system, a microprocessor is connected to an auxiliary unit or application-specific matrix coprocessor. The microprocessor can control the operation of the MPC algorithm, i.e., carry out the tasks of input/output for the MPC algorithm, initialize and send the appropriate commands to auxiliary unit and receive back the optimal control moves or instructions from auxiliary unit. The auxiliary unit can operate as a matrix coprocessor by executing matrix operations, e.g. addition, multiplication, inversion, etc., required by the MPC algorithm.

An alignment device for hole saw includes a first alignment member having a first end having an outer width slightly less than an inner diameter of the hole saw and serves as an alignment bearing surface therefor and a second end configured with a nose to be received adjacent a hole of a work piece and a draw bar and tightening member therewith for drawing the first alignment member against the work piece in a manner wherein the nose is self centering within the hole and thereby maintaining the first alignment member in a predetermined aligned position with respect to the work piece.

An apparatus is provided for logarithmic subtraction that is suitable for general purpose computing using the sign logarithm number system. In the sign logarithm number system, a sign bit is concatenated to a fixed point approximation of the logarithm of the absolute value of the real number being represented. Multiplication and division are easy and fast because the only steps required are to add or subtract the logarithms and exclusive OR the sign bits. In the prior art, logarithmic arithmetic has been restricted to limited precision applications (8-16 bits), such as digital filtering, because of the problem of accurate, high speed subtraction. The present invention provides a new circuit for subtracting two numbers represented in logarithmic form which makes design of arithmetic units for larger word sizes (32 bits) practical. The subtraction circuit approximates log.sub.b .vertline.1-b.sup.z .vertline., where z is the difference of the logarithms being subtracted. The value of z is shifted, and the high part of z is used as input to two ROMs. The output of the first ROM is added to the product of the second ROM and the low part of the shifted z value. In the case of z being close to zero, the low part of z is used as input to a third ROM, which provides a more accurate approximation of log.sub.b .vertline.1-b.sup.z .vertline..

Method and apparatus for fast logarithmic addition and subtraction

A method and apparatus are provided for increasing the number of characters or symbols that can be displayed on a line when the video signal that produces the display is restricted to a limited bandwidth, such as in the case of RF modulating the video signal to produce the display on an unmodified television set. The bandwidth of the video signal is reduced by displaying different portions of the display during one field time and the remaining portion of the display during the next field time. The persistence of the television screen creates the illusion of a complete display. Each luminescent region of each line will be displayed during one field time and blanked during the next field time. In the preferred embodiment, adjacent luminescent regions of a scan line (e.g., separated only by a black region) will be displayed in opposite fields. In an alternative embodiment, adjacent character regions will be displayed in opposite fields. The invention is compatible with standard and high definition television receivers.

Method and apparatus for increasing the number of characters per line in

A method and apparatus are provided for inhibiting unauthorized copying, unauthorized usage and automated cracking of proprietary software used in computer systems. The computer systems execute protected programs, which are protected by encapsulation and/or encryption. To provide security against unauthorized copying of software, means are provided that detect and inhibit automated cracking of protected programs. These means will destroy or make inaccessible information in the CPU during conditions when automated cracking could occur. These means will also store interrupt contexts in secret to prevent implementation of automated cracking. Additional features may be provided to allow operation as a general purpose computer system, where protected programs are distributed using public key cryptography and a means is provided to convert from this distribution form to the protected execution form.
