The processor is configured to send a second signal, via the antenna, indicative of a value of the operating characteristic to a receiving device outside of the capacitor can.

The method can include monitoring, by one or more smart meters, a plurality of voltage values associated with the electrical distribution network; and when one or more of the plurality of monitored voltage values are detected to be less than or equal to a predetermined voltage for a specified time: storing at least a portion of monitored line voltage values; indicating a detected fault by transmitting one or more messages from the one or more smart meters or line sensors to a central station receiver, and determining a fault location based at least in part on the one or more messages and a topological and electrical model of the electrical distribution network.

A digital decaying current offset correction method and apparatus, in one aspect, separates the requirements of detecting fault existence from the requirements of detecting fault location. Once the decaying offset removal routine is initiated, current and voltage are sampled and, for each current and voltage sample, current and voltage phasors are generated. The current phasor values, which are not offset corrected, may be used to determine whether to trip a breaker. Once the breaker is tripped, the decaying offsets are removed from the current phasors. The offset corrected current phasors are then used to locate the fault.
