The present invention provides fire-retarded rigid polyurethane foam comprising the reaction product of polyol and isocyanate foam forming components and a dialkyl phosphorus-containing compound, namely a reactive mono-hydroxyl-functional dialkyl phosphinates, as flame retardant, serving as highly efficient reactive flame retardant in said rigid polyurethane foam.

The present invention provides dialkyl phosphorus-containing compounds, namely reactive mono-hydroxyl-functional dialkyl phosphinates, serving as highly efficient reactive flame retardants in flexible polyurethane foams. The invention further provides fire-retarded polyurethane compositions comprising said the reaction product of the mono-hydroxyl-functional dialkyl phosphinates with polyol and isocyanate foam forming components.

The present invention provides novel cyclic phosphorus-containing compounds, namely hydroxyl-functional phospholene-1-oxides, serving as highly efficient reactive flame retardants in urethane systems, particularly in flexible polyurethane foams, semi-rigid and rigid polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams. The invention further provides fire-retarded polyurethane compositions comprising said hydroxyl-functional phospholene-1-oxides.

The present invention provides novel cyclic phosphorus-containing compounds, namely hydroxyl-functional phospholene-1-oxides, serving as highly efficient reactive flame retardants in urethane systems, particularly in flexible polyurethane foams, rigid polyurethane foams and rigid polyisocyanurate foams. The invention further provides fire-retarded polyurethane compositions comprising said hydroxyl-functional phospholene-1-oxides.

The invention relates to a process for preparing bromine-containing polymer, comprising a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of tetrabromoxylylene dihalide, or tetrabromoxylylene dihalide in combination with pentabromobenzyl halide, with a reactant having one or more six-membered aromatic rings, wherein the reaction takes place in a solvent in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and isolating from the reaction mixture the bromine-containing polymer. The so-formed polymers and their use as flame retardants form additional aspects of the invention.

The invention provides a process for preparing bromine-containing polymers, comprising a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of pentabromobenzyl halide with a polymer reactant which contains one or more six-membered aromatic ring(s) in its repeat unit, in the presence of at least one Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The so-formed bromine-containing polymers, having pendent &#x2014;CHCBrgroups attached to at least a portion of the six-membered aromatic rings of the polymer, with a carbon ring atom of said six-membered aromatic ring being bonded to the aliphatic carbon of said &#x2014;CHCBrpendent group, are also provided. These bromine-containing polymers are useful as flame retarding agents.

A liquid flame retardant composition which comprises one or more flame retarding agents, which are the epoxides obtainable by reacting tetrabromobisphenol A with epichlorohydrin and their end-capped derivatives represented by Formula (1) is provided. Flame retardants, processes for their preparation and uses thereof in polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams

A liquid flame retardant composition having one or more flame retarding agents, which are the epoxides obtainable by reacting tetrabromobisphenol A with epichlorohydrin and their end-capped derivatives represented by Formula (1), is provided. The liquid composition is especially useful in the preparation of rigid polyurethane foams.

Process for the preparation of 3-bromoanisole comprising methoxydenitrating 3-bromonitrobenzene in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst (PTC), and the preparation of 3-bromonirtobenzene by the bromination of nitrobenzene with bromine in oleum. The methoxydenitration reagent in an alkali metal methoxide, which is selected from sodium methoxide and potassium methoxide. The amount of methoxide used is 1-1.5 mol per mol of 3-bromonitrobenzene. The alkali methoxide can be a pre-prepared solid or it can be prepared in situ, by the reaction of the corresponding alkali hydroxide and methanol. In the case when pre-prepared solid methoxide is used, the effective amount of alkali hydroxide is between 1.2-1.7 mol per mol of 3-bromonitrobenzebe. The reaction temperatures are between about 40 to 80&deg; C., with preference to reaction temperatures of 50 to 55&deg; C. In the case in which methoxide is prepared in situ, the effective amount of alkali hydroxide is between 2.2-2.4 mol per mol of 3-bromonitrobenzene. The reaction temperatures are between about 50 to 80&deg; C. with preference to reaction temperatures of 55 to 65&deg; C.

A process for the preparation of 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (5-HIPA) that comprises hydrolyzing a starting material chosen from among 5-bromoisophthalic acid (5-BIPA), mixtures of 5-BIPA and dibromoisophthalic acid isomers, and salts of thereof in an aqueous alkaline solution, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a copper compound catalyst and in a temperature range of between 100.degree. and 270.degree. C.
