An apparatus and method for matching an antenna having a high or low impedance with a transceiver circuit having an impedance of 50 ohms. A multilayer substrate, such as one or more printed circuit boards, is provided and has the various components of a matching circuit formed on including a capacitor and an inductor. The components are formed on the substrate using printed circuit techniques. A radiating element is connected to the matching circuit. The radiating element may be a discrete antenna or may also be formed on the substrate.

A retractable &frac12; wave antenna having an integral matching section that can be used on a cellular telephone will be matched to a transceiver circuit when extended. When the antenna is retracted, it acts as a &frac14; wave antenna and will still be matched to the transceiver circuit.

An antenna for a portable, wireless communication device comprising an antenna sheath having the mechanical components of the antenna positioned therein. The sheath is provided with a first bore formed in the base end thereof which is adapted to receive an electrically conductive, connector element therein. The sheath is also provided with a second bore formed therein at the inner end of the first bore which is adapted to receive a first helical antenna element therein. The sheath is further provided with a third bore formed therein at the inner end of the second bore which is adapted to receive a second helical antenna element therein. The second and third bores have a plurality of longitudinally extending, radially spaced-apart ribs protruding inwardly into the bores for engagement with the antenna elements therein to position the antenna elements in the bores and to create air dielectric chambers between the sheath and the antenna elements.

A radio transceiver of the present invention includes a transmission line within a housing. The transmission line is comprised of a hollow center conductor and an outer conductor, both connected to a transceiver circuit. The transmission line is also connected to a low impedance connector which is coupled to the housing. A retractable 1/2 wave antenna having an integral matching section will be matched to a transceiver circuit when extended. When the antenna is retracted, the antenna is retracted within the center conductor and acts as a 1/4 wave antenna and will still be matched to the transceiver circuit.

A PCMCIA antenna for wireless communications is provided which provides the performance of a 1/2 wave antenna used for wireless communication, both transmission and receiving, on PCMCIA and other platforms for wireless data communications. The antenna comprises a housing which is adapted to be secured and supported by the host device and comprises a housing including housing members which are ultrasonically welded together. A flexible circuit board is provided in the housing which serves as the lower radiating element. A coaxial cable extends into the housing and has its braid soldered to the lower radiating element so that the same serves as a counterpoise for the antenna. The center wire of the coaxial cable is connected by a flexible trace to a flexible printed circuit board which is encased in an insulated sheath which forms the upper radiating element. The upper radiating element is pivotally secured to the housing so that the upper radiating element may be moved to a stowed position wherein it is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing, where it may be pivotally moved upwardly with respect to the housing to a 90 degree angle with respect to the housing.
