An optical device includes a stack that includes a first curved optical element stacked with a second curved optical element. The second curved optical element propagates light by total internal reflection. The stack also includes an incoupling diffractive grating that incouples the light into the second optical element and an outcoupling diffractive grating optically coupled to the incoupling diffractive grating through the second curved optical element. The outcoupling diffractive grating directs the light. The first curved optical element has a first refractive index, the second curved optical element has a second refractive index, and the first refractive index is different from the second refractive index by approximately 0.15 to 1.2.

An augmented reality optical system comprises a waveguide structure that includes a waveguide layer supported by a substrate. An input grating and an output grating reside within the waveguide layer and are laterally spaced apart. Input light from a display is made incident upon the input grating. The input light is coupled into the waveguide layer and travels therein as multiple guided modes to the output grating. The input and output gratings provide phase matching so that the guided modes are coupled out of the waveguide layer by the output grating continuously along the output grating to form output light. Meantime, light from a scene is transmitted perpendicularly through the output grating so that the output light and the light from the scene are combined by the eye of a user to form an augmented reality image.

Screening system and method for analyzing a plurality of biosensors

A screening system and method are described herein which provide a unique and practical solution for enabling label-free high throughput screening (HTS) to aid in the discovery of new drugs. In one embodiment, the screening system enables direct binding assays to be performed in which a biomolecular interaction of a chemical compound (drug candidate) with a biomolecule (therapeutic target) can be detected using assay volumes and concentrations that are compatible with the current practices of HTS in the pharmaceutical industry. The screening system also enables the detection of bio-chemical interactions that occur in the wells of a microplate which incorporates biosensors and surface chemistry to immobilize the therapeutic target at the surface of the biosensors. The screening system also includes fluid handling and plate handling devices to help perform automated HTS assays.

Self-referencing optical sensors and methods are described herein that can be used to detect bio-chemical interactions (e.g., biological binding of antigen-antibody pairs) that occur in for example a microplate. In one embodiment, the self-referencing optical sensor includes a substrate, a lower (reference) waveguide grating structure, a buffer layer and an upper (sensing) waveguide grating structure. This self-referencing optical sensor enables an optical interrogation system to detect a bio-chemical interaction independent of the effect of temperature by measuring a reference signal associated with the lower (reference) waveguide grating structure and measuring a sensing signal associated with the upper (sensing) waveguide grating structure. These two signals are then subtracted from one another to determine a sensing measurement that represents whether or not the bio-chemical interaction occurred that is independent of the effect of temperature. This is all possible because the self-referencing optical sensor has a lower (reference) waveguide grating structure with a thickness that was sized to make a rate of change of a lower resonant wavelength/temperature variation (&#x394;&#x3bb;/&#x394;T) substantially equal to a rate of change of an upper resonant wavelength/temperature variation (&#x394;&#x3bb;/&#x394;T). Several other embodiments of self-referencing optical sensors which have a specific structures and/or a specific compositions are also described herein.

In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, an optical device includes a first element which decomposes said optical signal into a first beam and a second beam with the first beam being in a first polarization state and the second beam being in a second polarization state. The first and second polarization states being orthogonal to one another and including each of said multiple channels. The optical device further includes a second element which transforms the first beam into a first elliptically polarized state having odd channels in a third polarization state and even channels in a fourth polarization state having even channels in the third polarization state and odd channels in the fourth polarization state; and a third element which combines the odd channels into a first output port and the even channels into a second output port.

The present invention is a modular optical switch fabric that includes optical modules that are inserted into an optical chassis by way of plug-in electrical connectors. Each optical module includes a collimator panel and a beam steering panel secured to a frame member. The frame member is configured to position the collimator panel in fixed optical alignment relative to the beam steering panel. The modular optical switch fabric is upgradeable. The optical switch fabric allows users to expand the switch fabric capacity by simply adding switch fabric modules. The optical switch fabric also features modules that can be replaced and repaired without causing interruptions in service.

An optical reading system is described herein which can be used to detect the presence of a biological substance (e.g., cell, drug, chemical compound) on a surface of a grating-based waveguide sensor. In one embodiment, the reading system includes a light source (e.g., laser, diode) for directing a light beam into the grating-based waveguide sensor and a detector (e.g., spectrometer, CCD imaging device) for receiving a reflected light beam from the grating-based waveguide sensor and analyzing the reflected light beam so as to detect a resonant wavelength/angle which corresponds to a predetermined refractive index that indicates whether a biological substance is located on the surface of the grating-based waveguide sensor. The grating-based waveguide sensor is tuned to have a resonant wavelength/angle at a predetermined spectral location by adjusting a skew angle defined as an angle between a plane of incidence of the light beam directed into the grating-based waveguide sensor and a grating vector which is perpendicular to the lines of a diffraction grating within the grating-based waveguide sensor. In another embodiment, the reading system is capable of performing a multiplexed interrogation of an array of grating-based waveguide sensors.
