An embodiment of the system of the present invention generally comprises a mailpiece sorting apparatus which includes a feeder, an OCR scanner, a video scanner, a mailpiece transporter, a diverter and output module, compartments or bins for receiving sorted mailpieces, optical character recognition system for reading addressee information, an addressee database, a suspect database, and microprocessor based control system. In alternate embodiments of the present invention: the system is contained in a detection area and clean room and/or connection to an investigation entity. The system and method of integrates prediction of the presence of life harming material in mailpieces with mailpiece processing so as to help deter delays in incoming mail delivery caused by the presence of life harming material the suspected presence of life harming material and to protect the intended recipients from harm.

A wireless headset is provided, comprising: a microphone for receiving a first audio signal and for generating a corresponding microphone electrical signal; a portable receiver/transmitter electrically connected to the microphone for transmitting a first carrier frequency modulated according to the microphone's electrical signal; a remote receiver/transmitter for receiving and demodulating the modulated first carrier frequency to generate a first electrical signal corresponding to the microphone electrical signal, the remote receiver/transmitter also for transmitting a second carrier frequency modulated according to a second electrical signal; the portable receiver/transmitter also for receiving and demodulating the second modulated carrier frequency to generate a speaker electrical signal; and a speaker electrically connected to the portable receiver/transmitter for transforming the speaker's electrical signal into a second audio signal, one of the first and second carrier frequencies being above 900 Megahertz, the other of the first and second carrier frequencies being below 900 Megahertz.

A method and apparatus for cropping an image in digital form. The image to be cropped is represented as a first digital array which is operated on by an edge enhancement transformation to generate a second, binary digital array wherein edges of the image are emphasized. The second digital array is then partitioned into predetermined segments which are typically rows and columns of the array and the pixel values of each row and column are summed to generate brightness sums. The second digital array is then partitioned into a first, brighter, central group of rows and a second, less bright group consisting of upper and lower borders of rows; and a third, brighter, central group of column and left and right borders of columns in accordance with predetermined criteria relating to the brightness sums. The boundaries between the borders and the central groups are then applied to the first digital array and only those pixel values corresponding to pixel values common to the first and third groups are output to generate a cropped image.
