A drill bit includes a bit body and one or more cutters positioned on the bit body at select locations. At least one vibrational device is positioned on the bit body to impart vibration to the bit body and thereby mitigate stick-slip.

A disclosed example embodiment includes a drill bit used to form wellbores in subterranean formations. The drill bit includes a drill bit body for coupling to a lower end of a drill string. The drill bit body includes at least one support arm having an inwardly extending journal with a journal bearing having at least one radially reduced pocket extending at least partially circumferentially around the journal bearing including a load side of the journal bearing. At least one rotary cutter assembly is rotatably mounted to the journal. A plurality of cutting elements is disposed on the at least one rotary cutter assembly. At least two independent hardmetal pads are positioned within the at least one radially reduced pocket such that the hardmetal pads have a gap disposed therebetween.

The present disclosure relates to nested bearings and seals for use in roller cone drill bits. The bearing may include a bearing member, such as a flange or bushing, that is nested with a seal boss.

A well tool can include inner and outer seals interposed between components of the well tool, and a circumferential spacer which prevents contact between the inner seal and one of the components which displaces relative to the inner seal. A method of sealing between components of a well tool can include sealingly engaging an outer seal between the components, and disposing an inner seal between the components, including spacing the inner seal away from one of the components, whereby the inner seal sealingly contacts one of the components only after the well tool is disposed in a well. A drill bit can include inner and outer seals interposed between components of the drill bit, and a circumferential spacer which prevents contact between the inner seal and one of the components, the circumferential spacer being positioned upstream of the outer seal relative to a lubricant supply of the drill bit.

A downhole seal system for roller cone drill bits includes a seal gland having a width larger than it depth. In one implementation, the seal gland includes a protrusion along its base on which a seal element seats. The seal element is a single, annular seal element with a recess formed therein so as to define two lobes. The seal element seats in the gland so that the recess engages the protrusion. The lobes function as separate seal elements, although they are a single unitary seal element disposed in a single gland.

Symmetrical seal

An extended life seal is incorporated into a drill bit used for drilling a wellbore. The drill bit can include a seal surface, a seal which engages the seal surface, and a groove which compresses the seal greater on opposite axial sides than at a central portion of the seal. The drill bit may include the seal having a cylindrical surface which engages the seal surface, and another cylindrical surface opposite the first surface, and the groove having a third cylindrical surface which engages the second surface, and wherein the groove simultaneously biases the seal toward the seal surface on opposite axial sides of the third surface. The drill bit may include the seal having right cylindrical shaped inner and outer surfaces, and a contact pressure between the seal surface and the seal being greater at each opposite side of the seal than at a central portion of the seal.

A method is disclosed that generates design profiles and a surface therefrom that promote water drainage from soil in an area of interest. Topographical data describing an initial surface of the area of interest are used to form initial profiles. The method generates the design profiles using the initial profiles and desired design parameters such as minimum slope, maximum slope, optimal slope, maximum depth, optimal depth, starting elevation, ending elevation, rules of curvature, and rules of earth balancing. The method generates design surface profiles so that the cut volumes and fill volumes of the soil are at or near balance as much as possible from the available soil in the area of interest.

A roller cone drill bit having a bit body with at least one support arm extending from the bit body. Each support arm may have an associated spindle extending inwardly. A respective cone assembly may be rotatably disposed on each spindle. At least one diverter plug may be disposed in a hole formed in each support arm. A void space may be formed between one end of each diverter plug and the bottom of the associated hole. At least one fluid flow passageway may extend from the surface of the associated support arm to the void space to allow communication of fluid containing debris with the void space. Rotating action of the roller cone drill bit and associated cone assemblies may force packing of debris into the void space which results in biasing the diverter plug outwardly from the associated hole to contact adjacent portions of the associated cone assembly.

A roller cone drill bit having a bit body with at least one support arm extending therefrom. Each support arm may have an interior surface and an exterior surface with an associated spindle extending inwardly from the interior surface. A respective cone assembly may be rotatably disposed on each spindle. A gap may be formed between interior portions of each cone assembly and exterior portions of the associated spindle with a fluid seal disposed in the gap to block fluid flow therethrough. Each cone assembly may include a generally circular backface disposed adjacent to the interior surface of the associated support arm. At least one fluid passageway may extend through each support arm to allow communication of fluid from the interior surface to an exterior surface of the support arm. A debris diverter insert having a generally hollow bore may be disposed within each fluid passageway.

An apparatus is disclosed comprising a first attachment portion fixed to a housing and a detachable match strike device comprised of a first surface having a second attachment portion and a second surface, opposite the first surface, having a match strike material. The first attachment portion may be VELCRO (Trademarked) or a VELCRO (Trademarked) portion comprised of either &ldquo;hooks&rdquo; or &ldquo;loops&rdquo;. The second attachment portion may be comprised of a VELCRO (Trademarked) portion which attaches to the first attachment portion. The first attachment portion attaches to the second attachment portion to connect the detachable match strike device to the housing. The first attachment and the second attachment portions may be strips of VELCRO (Trademarked) material. The housing may be a matchbox. The housing may be a circular receptacle, and the first attachment portion and the second attachment portions may be circular. The detachable match strike device may be comprised of a backing material to which the second attachment portion and the match strike material are fixed.
