A flow path assembly for a gas turbine engine is provided. The flow path assembly may include an outer casing comprising a metal material having a first coefficient of thermal expansion, a ceramic structure comprising a ceramic material having a second coefficient of thermal expansion, and a mounting component attached on a first end to the outer casing and attached on a second end to the ceramic structure. The mounting component may be constructed from at least two materials transitioning from the first end to the second end such that the coefficient of thermal expansion is different at the first end than the second end.

CTE matching hanger support for CMC structures

Gas turbine engines, as well as outer walls and flow path assemblies of gas turbine engines, are provided. For example, an outer wall of a flow path comprises a combustor portion extending through a combustion section, and a turbine portion extending through at least a first turbine stage of a turbine section. The combustor and turbine portions are integrally formed as a single unitary structure that defines an outer boundary of the flow path. As another example, a flow path assembly comprises a combustor dome positioned a forward end of a combustor; an outer wall extending from the combustor dome through at least a first turbine stage; and an inner wall extending from the combustor dome through at least a combustion section. The combustor dome extends radially from the outer wall to the inner wall and is integrally formed with the outer and inner walls as a single unitary structure.

Unitary flow path structure

A ceramic matrix composite article includes a chemical vapor infiltration ceramic matrix composite base portion including ceramic fiber reinforcement material in a ceramic matrix material having between 0% and 5% free silicon. The ceramic matrix composite article further includes a melt infiltration ceramic matrix composite covering portion including a ceramic fiber reinforcement material in a ceramic matrix material having a greater percentage of free silicon than the chemical vapor infiltration ceramic matrix composite base portion.

Ceramic matrix composite articles

A turbine blade sealing structure for a ceramic matrix composite component is provided. The turbine sealing structure includes at least one top ply abutting a top portion of a shank. The at least one top ply extends out over the top portion of the shank. The turbine sealing structure includes at least one side ply abutting a side portion of the shank. The at least one side ply extends along a side portion of the shank. The at least one top ply and at least one side ply form an angel wing and a skirt with on the shank of the ceramic matrix composite component.

Turbine blade sealing structure

Flow path assemblies for gas turbine engines are provided. For example, a flow path assembly defining a flow path through a gas turbine engine, as well as axial and radial directions that are orthogonal to one another and a circumferential direction extending about the axial direction, comprises a nozzle airfoil having a first end opposite a second end and a wall defining a flow path boundary. The wall has an opening therein through which the second end of the nozzle airfoil protrudes such that the second end extends outside of the flow path. The flow path assembly further comprises a cap extending over the second end of the nozzle airfoil and an attachment member extending through the second end and the cap to attach the second end to the cap. Other embodiments of a flow path assembly having nozzle airfoils decoupled from the flow path boundary also are provided.

Flow path assemblies and gas turbine engines are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a flow path assembly comprises an inner wall and a unitary outer wall including a combustor portion extending through a combustion section and a turbine portion extending through at least a first turbine stage of a turbine section. The combustor portion and the turbine portion are integrally formed as a single unitary structure. The inner wall and the unitary outer wall define a combustor of the combustion section. In another exemplary embodiment, a flow path assembly comprises a unitary inner wall defining an inner boundary of a flow path and extending from a forward end of a combustor through a nozzle portion of a first turbine stage, and a unitary outer wall defining an outer boundary of the flow path and extending from the forward end of the combustor through at least the first turbine stage.

Flow path assemblies and gas turbine engines are provided. A flow path assembly may comprise a combustor dome positioned at a forward end of a combustor of a combustion section of a gas turbine engine, and a unitary outer wall including a combustor portion extending through the combustion section and a turbine portion extending through at least a first turbine stage of a turbine section of the gas turbine engine. The combustor portion and the turbine portion are integrally formed as a single unitary structure. The flow path assembly also comprises an inner wall extending from the forward end of the combustor through at least the combustion section. The combustor dome extends radially from the unitary outer wall to the inner wall and is configured to move axially with respect to the inner wall and the unitary outer wall. Other flow path assemblies and gas turbine engine configurations are provided.

A rotor blade assembly for a rotor of a gas turbine engine having an axis of rotation includes a shank portion formed from a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material. The rotor blade assembly also includes a platform portion formed from a substantially similar CMC material as that of the shank portion. The platform portion is coupled to the shank portion. The platform portion and the shank portion cooperate to at least partially define two opposing side portions of the rotor blade assembly. The opposing side portions are angularly separated with respect to the axis of rotation. The rotor blade assembly further includes a damper retention apparatus. The damper retention apparatus is coupled to the shank portion. The damper retention apparatus includes at least one angled bracket apparatus extending toward a circumferentially adjacent rotor blade assembly.

Turbine rotor blade assembly and method of assembling same

Methods for fabricating a component of a gas turbine engine are provided. In one embodiment, the method includes molding a CMC material to form a first portion of the gas turbine engine component, processing the first portion to form a first assembly, preparing the first assembly and a second portion of the gas turbine engine component for processing, and processing the first assembly and second portion to form a second assembly. In another embodiment, the method includes processing a first plurality of CMC plies to form a first assembly; positioning the first assembly and a second plurality of CMC plies on a tool for processing, the first assembly defining a first plane, the second plurality of plies defining a second plane, wherein the second plane is perpendicular to the first plane; and processing the first assembly and the second plurality of plies to form a second assembly.

Fabrication of gas turbine engine components using multiple processing steps

Methods and materials for forming in-situ features in a ceramic matrix composite component are described. The method of forming a ceramic matrix composite component with cooling features, comprises forming a preform tape, laying up said preform tape to a desired shape, placing a high-temperature resistant fugitive material insert of preselected geometry in the preform tape of the desired shape, compacting the preform tape of the desired shape, burning out the preform tape of the desired shape, melt infiltrating the desired shape, removing the high-temperature resistant insert to form the cooling features during one of the burning out or the melt infiltrating or following the burning out or the melt infiltrating.

Methods and materials for forming in-situ cavities for silicon-based ceramic matrix composite components

A combustor for a gas turbine engine is disclosed. The combustor is described as comprising a dome plate coupled to a liner thereof, with at least one heat shield comprised of a ceramic matrix composite coupled at the aft end of the dome plate. Also described is a method for assembling a combustor for a gas turbine engine, including releasing a metal alloy heat shield from a dome plate and providing a ceramic matrix composite heat shield as replacement.

Gas turbine engine combustor with CMC heat shield and methods therefor

A process for producing airfoil components containing ceramic-based materials and having a tip cap. The process entails forming an airfoil portion of the component from an airfoil portion material that contains a precursor of a ceramic-based material. The airfoil portion material defines concave and convex walls of the airfoil portion, and the concave and convex walls define a tip region of the airfoil portion and at least one cavity within the airfoil portion. At least a first ply is formed that contains a precursor of a ceramic-based material, and the first ply at least partially closes the cavity at the tip region of the airfoil portion. The airfoil portion material and the first ply are then cured so that the first ply forms a tip cap that closes the cavity and the precursors of the airfoil portion material and first ply are converted to the ceramic-based materials thereof.
