A capacitor for an implantable medical device is presented. The capacitor includes an anode, a cathode, a separator therebetween, and an electrolyte over the anode, cathode, and separator. The electrolyte includes ingredients comprising acetic acid, ammonium acetate, phosphoric acid, and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The capacitor has an operating voltage ninety percent or greater of its formation voltage.

Capacitor electrolyte

The invention is directed to designs for capacitors of implantable medical devices (IMDs) such as implantable defibrillators, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, implantable pacemaker-cardioverter-defibrillators, and the like. The capacitor designs can reduce capacitor volume significantly and may also improve charge holding capacity relative to conventional capacitor designs. Moreover, since capacitors typically comprise a significant portion of the volume of an IMD, significant reductions in capacitor volume can likewise significantly reduce the size of the IMD.

The electrolyte comprises: about 35-60%, by weight water; about 10-55%, by weight organic solvent; about 0.05 to 10%, by weight, sulphuric acid; about 0.05 to 10%, by weight, boric acid; and about 0.05 to 10%, by weight, phosphorus oxy acid.

Low freezing electrolyte for an electrolytic capacitor

An electrode for a capacitor includes a substrate comprising at least one of glassy carbon and a metal. According to various embodiments, the substrate may be provided as glassy carbon or any of a variety of metals for use in capacitors. The capacitor also includes an activated carbon material adjacent the substrate. The activated carbon layer includes oxygen-containing functional groups. A material is provided in contact with the activated carbon layer for providing enhanced capacitance for the electrode. A lid is sealingly coupled to the case along adjacent edges of the lid and the wall, the lid and said case forming an encasement of the capacitor structure, the lid comprising a second interior surface. A cathode material is disposed proximate the first and second interior surfaces, and an anode is positioned intermediate the cathode material and has a peripheral portion positioned proximate the adjacent edges. A protective layer on the peripheral portion protects the anode during the sealing process. A first insulative separator is positioned between the anode and the cathode material.
