An aqueous composition can be used for pre-treating a substrate prior to inkjet printing to provide a white opaque background for inkjet-printed images. This aqueous composition includes: (a) one or more water-soluble salts of a multivalent metal cation at 5-30 weight %; (b) a nonionic or cationic water-soluble or water-dispersible polymeric binder material at 5-30 weight %; and (c) surface-treated visible light-scattering particles having a D(median) particle size of at least 0.04 &#x3bc;m and up to and including 2 &#x3bc;m in an amount of 5-60 weight % based on the total aqueous composition weight. The pre-treated substrate is useful as an inkjet receiving medium that can be readily inkjet-printed particularly with anionically-stabilized aqueous pigment-based inks.

Inkjet printed articles and method of making

A flexible inkjet-printed article is prepared by: A') providing an ink receptive medium having a substrate and an aqueous-based ink-receptive layer. This layer has: (a) a water-soluble salt of a multivalent metal cation; (b) one or both of a polyvinyl alcohol and a polyvinyl amine (or a copolymer derived from a vinyl alcohol and a vinyl amine) at 0.5-30 weight %; and optionally, (c) a crosslinking agent and (d) silica particles. At least one aqueous pigment-based ink is deposited directly on the aqueous-based ink-receptive layer, each having: a) an anionically-stabilized pigment colorant; and b) a water-miscible humectant at 1-20 weight %, each having a carbon to oxygen atom ratio of &#x2265;1.0:1.0 and only two hydroxy groups. After drying, a functional layer with adhesive composition is formed on the inkjet-printed image and a flexible material is laminated to the functional layer, to form a flexible inkjet printed article.

Method of preparing laminated article

An approach to printing a nickel precursor ink on a wide range of substrates for electronics and magnetic applications is disclosed. The nickel ink reduces to elemental nickel following heating. The ink was printed using an ultrasonic aerosol printing technique. By sintering the nickel precursor ink in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field, the reduced nickel complex formed continuously aligned nickel nanofibers axially aligned with the direction of the magnetic field. The fabrication of aligned interlayered nanofiber films provides opportunities to produce structures with enhanced isotropic electrical and magnetic properties. The resistivity of the film was found to be as low as 0.56 m&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm, and the saturation magnetization was measured to be 30 emu/g, which is comparable to bulk Ni. Magnetic anisotropy was induced with an easy axis along the direction of the applied magnetic field with soft magnetic properties.

Inkjet printing is carried out to provide monochrome or polychrome inkjet-printed images. An ink-receptive medium is provided with a substrate with an aqueous-based ink-receptive layer disposed thereon. The aqueous-based ink-receptive layer has: (a) one or more water-soluble salts of a multivalent metal cation in an amount of 0.6-49 weight %; (b) one or both of a polyvinyl alcohol and a polyvinyl amine (or a copolymer of a vinyl alcohol and vinyl amine) in a total amount of 0.5-30 weight %; and optionally, (c) a crosslinking agent and (d) silica particles. One or more aqueous pigment-based inks are inkjet printed onto this aqueous-based ink-receptive layer, each ink comprising: a) one or more anionically-stabilized pigment colorants; b) one or more water-miscible humectants that are present in a total amount of 1-20 weight % and each having a carbon atom to oxygen atom ratio of at least 1.0:1.0 and only two hydroxy groups.

Method for inkjet printing

An inkjet-printed article has an ink receptive medium with a substrate and an aqueous-based ink-receptive layer disposed thereon. The aqueous-based ink-receptive layer includes: (a) a water-soluble salt of a multivalent metal cation at 0.6-49 weight %; (b) one or both of a polyvinyl alcohol and a polyvinyl amine (or a copolymer derived from a vinyl alcohol and a vinyl amine) at 0.5-30 weight %; and optionally, (c) a crosslinking agent or (d) silica particles. The article also has an inkjet-printed image disposed on the aqueous-based ink-receptive layer, provided from one or more aqueous pigment-based inks, each of which has a) an anionically-stabilized pigment colorant; b) one or more water-miscible humectants at a total amount of 1-20 weight %, each of which has a carbon atom to oxygen atom ratio of at least 1.0:1.0 and only two hydroxy groups.

Article prepared by inkjet printing

Inkjet printed articles can be made by providing an inkjet receiving medium comprising a substrate and a topcoat layer, and inkjet printing an aqueous pigment-based ink onto the topcoat layer. The topcoat layer has: (a) one or more water-soluble salts of a multivalent metal cation; and (b) composite particles having a Rockwell Hardness of &#x2264;R90 and each of the composite particles comprising domains of a (i) first organic polymer and domains of a (ii) second organic polymer. The domains of the (ii) second organic polymer are dispersed within the domains of the (i) first organic polymer. The melting point of the (i) first organic polymer is lower than the melting point of the (ii) second organic polymer. The weight ratio of the (i) first organic polymer to the (ii) second organic polymer is chosen such that the (b) composite particles have a density of 1.0-1.5 g/ml.

Method for inkjet printing and printed article

A flexible inkjet printed article includes an ink receptive medium comprising a substrate and an aqueous-based ink-receptive layer. The aqueous-based ink-receptive layer has: (a) a water-soluble salt of a multivalent metal cation; (b) one or more of a polyvinyl alcohol and a polyvinyl amine (or a copolymer derived from a vinyl alcohol and a vinyl amine) at 0.5-30 weight %; and optionally, (c) a crosslinking agent or (d) silica particles. An inkjet-printed image is disposed on the ink-receptive layer, provided from one or more aqueous pigment-based inks, each having: a) one or more anionically-stabilized pigment colorants; b) one or more water-miscible humectants at 1-20 weight %, each of which has a carbon atom to oxygen atom ratio of at least 1.0:1.0 and only two hydroxy groups. A functional layer comprising an adhesive composition disposed on the inkjet-printed image; and a flexible polymeric film or paper adhered to the functional layer.

Laminated article

An aqueous composition can be used for pre-treating a substrate prior to inkjet printing. This composition includes: (a) one or more water-soluble salts of a multivalent metal cation; and (b) composite particles having a Rockwell Hardness of less than or equal to R90 and each of the composite particles comprising domains of a (i) first organic polymer and domains of a (ii) second organic polymer. The domains of the (ii) second organic polymer are dispersed within the domains of the (i) first organic polymer. Moreover, the melting point of the (i) first organic polymer is lower than the melting point of the (ii) second organic polymer. The weight ratio of the (i) first organic polymer to the (ii) second organic polymer is chosen such that the (b) composite particles have a density of 1.0-1.5 g/ml.

Aqueous pre-treatment compositions for inkjet printing

An inkjet receiving medium having enhanced surface properties has a substrate and a topcoat layer disposed thereon. The topcoat layer has: (a) one or more water-soluble salts of a multivalent metal cation; and (b) composite particles having a Rockwell Hardness of less than or equal to R90 and each of the composite particles comprising domains of a (i) first organic polymer and domains of a (ii) second organic polymer. The domains of the (ii) second organic polymer are dispersed within the domains of the (i) first organic polymer. The melting point of the (i) first organic polymer is lower than the melting point of the (ii) second organic polymer. The weight ratio of the (i) first organic polymer to the (ii) second organic polymer is chosen such that the (b) composite particles have a density of 1.0-1.5 g/ml.

Inkjet receiving media

Inkjet receiving medium are prepared by disposing an aqueous composition onto at least one surface of a substrate to provide a topcoat layer. The aqueous composition has: (a) one or more water-soluble salts of a multivalent metal cation; and (b) composite particles having a Rockwell Hardness of less than or equal to R90 and each of the composite particles comprising domains of a (i) first organic polymer and domains of a (ii) second organic polymer. The domains of the (ii) second organic polymer are dispersed within the domains of the (i) first organic polymer. The melting point of the (i) first organic polymer is lower than the melting point of the (ii) second organic polymer. The weight ratio of the (i) first organic polymer to the (ii) second organic polymer is chosen such that the (b) composite particles have a density of 1.0-1.5 g/ml.

Method for providing inkjet receiving media

A precursor article has a substrate and a polymeric layer having a reactive composition that contains a non-crosslinked thiosulfate copolymer comprising: (a) recurring units comprising pendant thiosulfate groups, and (b) recurring units comprising pendant carboxy, carboxylate, phospho, phosphonate, phosphate, sulfo, sulfonate, or sulfite groups. The (a) recurring units are present in an amount of 1 to 30 mol %, and the (b) recurring units are present in an amount of 70 to 99 mol %. This precursor article can be used to provide a product article comprising a substrate in which the polymeric layer has both exposed regions and non-exposed regions. The exposed regions contain a pattern of electrolessly plated metal within or deposited on the surface of an at least partially crosslinked polymer that has been derived from the non-crosslinked thiosulfate copolymer. The non-exposed regions have none of the electrolessly plated metal or the non-crosslinked thiosulfate polymer.

Forming conductive metal patterns using thiosulfate copolymers

A conductive pattern can be formed using a polymeric layer that contains a reactive composition having a reactive polymer. This reactive polymer comprises pendant photosensitive 1,2-diarylethylene groups. The reactive composition can be patternwise exposed to suitable radiation to induce crosslinking within the reactive polymer. The reactive composition and reactive polymer in the non-exposed regions can be removed due to their aqueous solubility, but the exposed regions of the polymeric layer are contacted with electroless seed metal ions, which are then reduced, followed by electrolessly plating with a suitable metal to form the desired conductive pattern. Various articles can be prepared during this process, and the product article can be incorporated into various electronic devices.

Forming conductive metal patterns using water-soluble polymers

An electrically-conductive pattern is prepared using a reactive composition having: (1) a reactive polymer; (2) a compound that provides a cleaving acid upon exposure to radiation; and (3) a crosslinking agent that reacts in the presence of the cleaving acid, to provide crosslinking in the reactive polymer. A polymeric layer of the reactive composition is patternwise exposed to provide a polymeric layer comprising non-exposed regions and exposed regions comprising a polymer comprising sulfonic acid or sulfonate groups. The exposed regions are contacted with electroless seed metal ions to form a pattern of electroless seed metal ions, which pattern is reduced to provide a pattern of corresponding electroless seed metal particles. Electrolessly plating is then carried out in the exposed regions. The unique reactive comprises (a) recurring units represented Structure (A) as described in the disclosure, and can also include other recurring units that are crosslinkable or provide other properties.

Forming electrically-conductive patterns using crosslinkable reactive polymers

A conductive pattern can be formed using a polymeric layer that contains a reactive composition having a reactive polymer. This reactive polymer comprises (i) a backbone, and (ii) pendant photosensitive non-aromatic unsaturated heterocyclic groups comprising an amide group that is conjugated with a carbon-carbon double bond. The non-aromatic unsaturated heterocyclic groups are linked to the backbone at an amide nitrogen atom. The reactive composition can be patternwise exposed to suitable radiation to induce crosslinking within the reactive polymer. The reactive composition and reactive polymer in the non-exposed regions can be removed due to their aqueous solubility, but the exposed regions of the polymeric layer are contacted with electroless seed metal ions, which are then reduced, followed by electrolessly plating with a suitable metal to form the desired conductive pattern. Various articles can be prepared during this process, and the product article can be incorporated into various electronic devices.

A conductive metal pattern is formed using a reactive polymer that can provide pendant sulfonic acid groups upon exposure to radiation, and (2) pendant groups that are capable of providing crosslinking. The polymeric layer is patternwise exposed to radiation to provide first exposed regions that are then contacted with electroless seed metal ions to form a pattern of electroless seed metal ions, followed by contact with a halide. At least some of the electroless seed metal halide can be exposed to form second exposed regions. The polymeric layer can be contacted with a reducing agent either: (i) to develop the electroless seed metal image in the second exposed regions, or (ii) to develop all of the electroless seed metal halide in the first exposed regions, and optionally contacted with a fixing agent. The electroless seed metal nuclei in the first exposed regions can be electrolessly plated with a conductive metal.
