The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for controlling an energy storage system. The energy storage system includes a plurality of parallel-connected energy storage devices. The method includes determining, by one or more controllers, a limiting energy storage device based at least in part on a current rating for the limiting energy storage device. The method includes determining, by the one or more controllers, an adjusted allowable system current based at least in part on modifying one or more operational parameters of the limiting energy storage device. The method includes determining, by the one or more controllers, a modified operational parameter of the limiting energy storage device to increase the allowable system current of the energy storage system. The method includes controlling the limiting energy storage device based at least in part on the modified operational parameter.

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for controlling an energy storage system. The energy storage system includes a plurality of battery strings connected in parallel with the battery strings having a plurality of batteries connected in series. The method includes determining, via a controller, one or more operating parameters of the energy storage system. The method also includes determining, via the controller, a maximum current rating of one or more of the battery strings. Another step includes estimating, via the controller, a voltage range for the one or more battery strings as a function of the one or more operating parameters and the maximum current rating. The method also includes dynamically controlling the one or more battery strings based on the voltage range so as to prevent over-current recharge or discharge of the parallel battery strings.

System and method for protecting energy storage systems from overcurrent conditions

A system and method for controlling ambient temperature at a power-consuming site includes a hybrid generator-battery power system. The generator-battery power system includes an engine-generator set and one or more DC-powered batteries that alternately share the site load. Thus, the method includes providing one or more temperature sensors communicatively coupled to a battery management system at the power-consuming site. Another step includes monitoring the ambient temperature of the power-consuming site via the one or more temperature sensors when one or more of the DC-powered batteries are discharging (i.e. when the engine-generator set is off). The method also includes sending, via the battery management system, a start-up command to the engine-generator set when the ambient temperature of the power-consuming site reaches a threshold temperature such that the engine-generator set can provide AC power to an air conditioning unit at the power-consuming site.

Recharge time of an energy storage device (ESD) is reduced through the application of a controlled potential and ESD recharge time management over the life of the hybrid system through manipulation of the ESD charge state window of operation. Fuel or energy savings is achieved by controlling the partial-state-of-charge (PSOC) window of the ESD based on a recharge resistance profile of the ESD and by controlling a charging potential applied to the ESD based on a recharge current and/or the estimated recharge resistance profile of the ESD.
