The present invention provides a narrow band infrared water cut meter for detecting a full water cut range of a flow stream. The water cut meter includes a light source probe for irradiating the flow stream with a narrow band of infrared light and a light detector probe for sensing infrared light passed through the flow stream. For a narrow band of infrared light of a predetermined wavelength, there is a large difference in the absorption of infrared radiation between oil and water. At such a wavelength, the narrow band of infrared light is substantially transmitted through water content and gas content of the flow stream and substantially absorbed by oil content of the flow stream. The water cut meter thus differentiates oil by treating gas like water. Unlike other water cut meters, the narrow band infrared water cut meter is independent of variations of oil and water densities, salinity, oil emulsions, varying flow rates, and the gas content of a flow stream.

Narrow band infrared water cut meter

A system for analyzing fluids. In one embodiment, the system measures the water content in an oil/water emulsion. A fluid probe comprising an infrared light emitting diode and a phototransistor measures the opacity of the fluid. The signal from the phototransistor is input into a series of potentiometers which are set to correspond to different percentages of water content. The outputs of the potentiometers are displayed by a light emitting diode panel. Means for automatically recalibrating the system in response to temperature changes is included. Further, means is included for recalibrating the system to operate in fluids having different API gravities. In a second embodiment, the system analyzes a fluid to identify and differentiate different fluids in a mixture. The system can distinguish between petroleum products having different opacities; that is, the system can differentiate between crude oil, light oil and distillate. Still further, the system can differentiate between conductive fluids, such as water, and non-conductive fluids, such as oil. An infrared light emitting diode and a phototransistor in a fluid probe output a signal indicating by the voltage level the opacity of the fluid. A pair of conductive pins in the fluid probe sense the conductivity of the fluid. The signals from the phototransistor and the conductive pins are input into a series of comparators which are set to preselected levels corresponding to different opacities. The outputs of the comparators are displayed by a light emitting diode panel.

Fluid analysis system

A system for monitoring and controlling the level of a fluid in a vessel, particularly applicable to controlling the pump operation at an oil well. The system includes a fluid level sensing unit having a plurality of sensors positioned at selected levels in the well casing outside the tubing string. The sensors operate independently to detect the presence of fluid and emit electrical signals which are received by a data conversion and sending unit immediately above the fluid level sensing unit in the well casing. The data conversion and sending unit converts the signals into discreet digital data bits which can be transmitted sequentially in one conductive wire to a data management and pump control unit at a convenient location nearby, usually at the well site. Thus, there is no need for a wire extending from each sensor. The data bits received by the data management and pump control unit are converted to a visual display in a light emitting diode panel. A pump flip-flop automatically operates the pump operating assembly in responsae to the rise and fall of oil or fluid in the well. The data from the sensors also is fed to a computer which stores the data for later retrieval. The computer also calculates other useful information and generates graphics which assist in the management of the oil recovery process.
